Here's an interesting statistically look at how he compared to other attackers in La Liga during his time there:

I have to say I was shocked. Pens seemingly contributed hugely to his impressive scoring rate. Without pens his scoring rate was no better than Soldado, Llorente or Negredo.
I would say those numbers aren't skewed by number of penalties, but number of starts. Those high up the list, Higuain, Benzema, Ozil, Sanchez, across those seasons had relatively few starts.
Higuain only started 18 games in one season but got 22 goals, and 19 games in the other season with 16 goals, he however had 37 sub appearances. Benzema started a few more games and had less subs, 26 starts with 21 goals and 19 starts with 11 goals. less goals but way more assists.
The difference is Falcao started 33 and 34 games those two seasons with only a single sub appearance, despite scoring significantly more than both, he started a lot more games due to the nature of the club.
It also doesn't take into account that Atletico aren't an attacking powerhoue or high scoring team and only came 5th in 11/12, 3rd but 24 points off the top in 12/13.
Anyone watching him play knows what a top striker he is, against Chelsea in the supercup he utterly torn them a new one, this is a team that defended it's way to the champions league title yet got bullied by Falcao. He was like Drogba on steroids and frequently played like that.
As always, stats in context, out of context they can show something very different. Of course some of his goals are penalties(the only thing I can find says that 6 out of 36 in all competitions in 11/12 were penalties, 16%, which is about the same as Messi's 86 goal record, and no different to normal.
Top strikers in hugely high scoring teams who come off the bench and can inject more energy into a smaller period of time against more tired opposition will not surprisingly have a goals per minutes ratio higher than one who plays 90 mins every single game with no rest... that's before you factor in the style of team, the quality of players around him, etc, etc.
What is interesting more than anything is Higuains goals to shots ration which was disgusting in both those seasons. 22 goals in 60 shots, 16 goals in 56 shots, those are numbers Messi hasn't beaten.
Falcao is a top top player, as is Higuain. Wenger not getting him and splashing 10-15mil more on Ozil instead was is the worst thing he's ever done at Arsenal. That Real got rid of Higuain to keep Bezema is the worst thing they've ever done.
