Transformers ! :D

I've just got back from a screening and all I can say is... meh. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the film from start to finish but little niggles annoyed me.

1. It was 40mins too long. They tried to flesh out the human characters when I believe they should have concentrated on the transformers. By the end you were sick of the love/hacking/soldier stories and didn't know which transformer was which when it really mattered, during the hectic action scenes.

2. The action while great, was let down by poor camera angle choices. The wide angle shots looked fantastic and really took your breath away but as soon as the camera moved in (which it does often,) you couldn't really tell what was going on, just that it looked good.

3.The section 7 guy. Need I say more?

4. Typical Hollywood dumbing down. The cinema was packed with 18-25 year olds who in all respects, were the nerdish type. Bad science and slightly childish jokes (sector 7) really didn't help the movie move along and often created little plot holes.

5. I still can't work out which Decepticon was which?. The similar designs caused a lot of confusion. A bit more colour alongside a lot more decepticon-only scenes would have gone a long way. In the cartoon they were often given just as much time on screen as the autobots.

The upsides include Shia LaBeouf and the Autobot's interaction scenes. I'm looking froward to see how they continue from here as solid groundwork has been laid. Hopefully the next one will focus on fleshing out the transformers a bit more and correct the mistakes that let down the incredible action.

I agree with a lot of that. Very boring film. Transformer designs were way too messy. Could barely make out their faces. The transformer fight scenes were hard to follow (mainly due to shaky camera work). All the transformers' dialog felt like it was put in as an afterthought (the hell am I talking about, a lot of things in the film felt that way). And definitely way too long. For a film with such poop plot, why did they make it nearly 2 AND A HALF HOURS??? Normally a film like this would be good if it's cheesy, but not this. Awful awful film.

The hype-machine has clearly fogged up peoples' view of this.

I can assure you that my view has definately not been 'fogged up by the hype-machine'. Infact hype generally tends to have the opposite effect and create dissapointment.

Regardless of hype, I genuinely found it one of the most entertaining action films I've ever seen, and to me it certainly didn't feel too long either. The reason it didn't feel too long was because there was no long boring character development scenes and pretentious dialogue, it was pretty much 2.5 hours solid of great action entertainment.

Yeah, it had it's fair share of cheese, but it's a film about GIANT ROBOTS! What were people expecting, Shakespeare?

I'm glad it didn't take itself to seriously, it worked IMO.

after reading this thread I thought id see if there were any previews nearby, and sure enough booked sme tickets to see it last night.

What a film, as a 30 something that grew up with these guys it was amazing to see them on the big screen. sure it was a little cheesey in places, but there was also some genuinely funny LOL moments, and then the action, without doubt the finest CGI I have seen in any film. There was the odd time where things got a little to close and confusing. but most of the time it is just stunning (unlike Spiderman 3 which was just a blurred mess of CGI). The voice acting was also top notch.

The main guy seems to be in quite a lot these days, but I thought he was great, very likable and a pretty good actor as well, the main sqeeze in it was stunning as well.

I came out of there thinking it was the best thing since sliced bread, pretty much the perfect action film, the missus mearly thought it was 'OK' with nice robot, although im putting that down to the fact she had some dumb ass blonde sat to her right texting her boyfriend, who was sat next to her, through out the WHOLE film.

I went to watch it earlier with my bother, brother in law, nephew and sister and we all loved it i think.

I wasn't really expecting much, but thoroughly enjoyed it, although I am disapointed they didn't get "you've got the touch" in there anywhere ;)

You've got the touch...

Derrr derrr drr dr dr

You've got the powerrrr...... :D

Now, I've just found my old Transfomers the Movie on video from about 15 odd years ago, still a great film...

Do I ruin my childhood memories by watching this?

I'd have to echo your sentiments, wasn't a great film. As much as I love the new look of the transformers they should have made them a tad simpler and felt like they were just wasting effort into making the transitions look cool and when you look at them closely they could have been a lot simpler. Too long and as usual Bay goes and put in product placement, granted it wasn't as bad as the Island but still. Pap plot and script. Get's a 6.5/10 from me, same as 300 really. Die Hard 4 was better imo and is a film I'd like to see again.

Ah super I now know I'm going to love it when I read this... 300 was brilliant :)

Infact... 300 was about 29times better than Die Hard4.

Saw this last weekend. Both me and my girlfriend left feeling it was a very cool film.

Good to see some others wearing decepticon/autobot t-shirts in there ;)

*Possible Spoilers*

Take out the prepubescent love story, puerile humour and put more focus on the decepticon rivalry (starscream and megatron). Take out that ridiculous introduction scene for the autobots, optimus prime, ghetto?... The introduction speech at the start of the film held so much promise. Even the scene at qatar was impressive. Take the stupid mouths/lips off them. Megatron was by far an away the best part of the film, " Is it fear or courage that compels you, fleshling? ". Heres hoping the sequel will be of a more serious nature, i'm not guessing it will though. My opinions.

P.S If Soundwave makes it into the second, i'll pay money just to see him speak, with his monotone, vocoder effect voice. </3

For all it's faults, I'm eagily awaiting the sequal, especially Soundwave.
This picture always makes me smile. :D

that picture kicks ass.

The only reason i'm gonna see the sequel is because of Soundwave. I wish they hadn't left him out =[

We need the Dinobots obviously as well

and the constructicons

Alpha Trion can sod off though (and hopefully he will)

Some nice effects but the actual fight scenes were too quick so you could barely make out the detail. Also the character development was very poor, the soldiers who survived in Qutar had virtually no time spent on knowing them. The film just kept flicking back to them occasionally. Perhaps it really lacked due to there being too many central characters to focus on.

I did enjoy it overall, but then again I was Transformers fan when I was a kid.

I hope they don't "sell out" and use a lame excuse to bring back Galvatron!

I'm all for him returning but I just hope they don't say something cheesy like "his circuits stored and began to harness the raw power of the all spark, and with a bit of jim'll fix it he's back and more powerful than ever"

Runbalk, let me introduce you to Michael Bay. Michael Bay, Runbalk :p

I thought it was terrific. The only niggel was not enough wide shots, but with the CG going on it was probably understandable. It didnt detract from the action though. Awesome film.

EXACTLY, I haven't seen it yet but i know Michael Bay's work so i know exactly what to expect.

Do people expect performances out of Godfather, and the plot of Usual Suspect? Think about it, its a film about giant robots from outer space fighting, directe by a guy who did The Rock, Bad boys I & II, Armageddon. Some of the biggest blockbusters of all time and damn good at it. This is his bread and butter and he doesn't tried to hide it. Personally I think he's the best director for summer blockbusters, Spielberg doesn't compare :p (He makes things too mellow dramatic)

Amazing film, and I think one of the first films to show an AC130 gunship in action.

I couldnt help but grin when Blackout opened up at the start the changes were awesome, although a little more use of the original *change noise* would have been nice. And I do agree that sometimes the action was a bit up close but it didnt detract from the overall quality of the film.

Can't wait for the sequel.
