TT, 318 or something else

I agree it would be. However no decisions have yet been made based on number plates. It was simply a requirement he specified. He may be flexible if you suggest something.

i have a 2004 (on a private plate though) Audi TT 225 Sport..

Bought from a main Audi dealer for £14985 and came with:

Xenon's, Sat Nav, heated Seats, CD Changer, Bose, 18" Wheels etc.

On the dyno at 226bhp, 0to60 in 5.9 secs. Average fuel consumption is 36.7mph (recorded over 100miles of varying journey of town / country road / motorway). Top speed at 155.

Im 22, it costs £750 a year to insure with a £300 excess. Tyres are Pirelli P-Zero Rosso's at £117 per tyre fitted.

Driving wise: Used to run a 330 bmw on a 53 plate, the TT is much more fun to drive although completely different inside. The TT has huge grip (especially with the pirelli tyres) and hugs corners, this is obviously due to the quattro 4wd system. Its not in the same league of 4wd as the Subaru Impretza STI prodrive for example, but more than enough to handle a roundabout at 70 or galloping through country roads. BMW has far more room but in relation driver space is the same. The TT is a sports car the BMW was a quick saloon. Image wise, I think the TT looks better, a 330 looks the same as every other 3 series BMW. Obviously whilst the TT has rear seats, you cannot get anything bigger than a baby in the back. For me that doesnt matter as there is atm only me and missus and she dont need much space.

I origionally wanted a M3 but insurance as expected at 22. So went for the 330 last year, then changed to the TT as I got bored with the BMW. really happy with my choice as the TT on a purely image basis is very nice and to drive is also really good fun.

IMO dont listen to people slating the TT driverability etc as being someone who has owned both, the TT is more fun to be in and is more involving than the 330BMW

The TT is not a Sports Car it's a posh, nice looking Coupe based on the Golf platform. That does not make a sports car. Although it has Quattro, it's still an FWD biased platform, and of course, being based on VW's Golf floorpan does not endow it with BMW 3 Series beating levels of dynamic ability.

You are the first person to ever say a TT is a more rewarding drive than a 330i. Infact the TT Mk1 is pretty much universally criticised for being more show than fun, and not a particularly good drivers tool, although a very good style icon. This is one of the areas where Audi have been said to have improved with the new model TT.

I love TT's, but I find your appraisal a little off the mark, perhaps becuase you are trying to subconciously justify your purchase, I dunno.

Another question for you, how did you manage to get a TT Quattro Sport on a 2004 plate with 225bhp?

All the Sport TT's are 240bhp, and were introduced as a runout model in 2005, a year after yours was built? Are you sure you don't have a regular TT 225 Quattro, a car which, whilst great, won't be doing 0-60 in 5.9 seconds this side of a spend at your local tuning shop.

Pirelli P-zero Rossos are rubbish they were that bad I took them off our new A3 2.0T Quattro at less than 4k miles and replaced the with Eagle F1s.
205/50/16 f1s fitted to my Volvo gave more grip than Rossos in 205/40/18 form as fitted to the A3. Binning them totally transformed the grip levels and confidence of the A3 to what it should have come from the factory with.

It's easy to confuse grip with handling which i guess is what Chef is doing. The TT has shed loads of grip and is very easy to correct if the back end steps out, the haldex system in my experience is very progressive when feeding power to the rear and doesn't tend to just dump loads of power at the rear if the front tyres slip. it does make it a lot of fun to drive.

however, it's biggest weakness is a severe lack of steering feel, for me it doesn't ruin the experience but does take away from it being the sports car it should have been. Oh and the lower centre of mavity, stiffer chassis and much firmer suspension setup makes it nothing like a mk4 golf to drive, regardless of the similarities in the platform.

I love TTs much more then most, but unfortunately a true drivers car they are not.
I've never driven a 3 series so have no basis for comparison on that front.

I have a 225 TTC and There is no question in it! Get the TT, why have a boring old 3 series that every tool and his dog has!! Get something thats bit of a design classic, well specced and a lovely interior!

Didn't Audi sell more TT 225's at one point than BMW sold 330i's? I'm sure I remember reading that somewhere but I can't back it up with fact unfortunately.

I can :p

By the end of tonight the exact figures will be here and we will see if your memory serves you correctly!

Most the people that complain about the TT have never even driven one. As someone started previously it has magnificent grip and the handling is not bad at all once you learn to drive it properly. It’s a lot more rewording to drive then my girlfriends 320i (new shape).
I have never driven a 330i however I have driven an older Z4 3.0 which was not even close to as much fun as the TT.

Having said all that it was pretty boring before I got it tuned by Revo, I think its hits 60 in just under 6 seconds, it is perfectly ok to drive over wet cobbles at 45 mph, up to the ski slopes ever weekend in the winter and it is till completely reliable eventuate I have not had time to service it about a year.

Only down side is I get 18 MPG but I drive it very hard, a good point to not for any forum members is not to buy this car from me when I sell it lol.

Oh and its NOTHING like a golf, I don’t care if its build on the same sub frame….. my old MK4 V5 handled nothing like the TT.
Oh and one more thing, the new TT is just a waste of time, well it is until they being out the 265BHP Quattro 2.0T, I tested one along with the new S3(not bad at all) while the handling is good the power delivery is as boring as my old man’s E270 CDi

Not driven a Z4, have driven a TT, liked the TT, cannot imagine how on earth a 3 litre RWD Roadster can be 'less fun' than the TT though.

And Paras, you are the first person to say the new TT is a waste of time compared to the first??

I should really take another 3.0 Z4 out on a drive, I may have just driven a bad car because I have driven the 130i which was fantastic, it was even better then the new S3.
Admittedly I am probably comparing the new TT to my one which has had quite a few mods the handling is better but the mk2 TT really felt under powered. I have no doubt that when the TT comes out with the 265 bhp quattro engine it will be excellent but until then I would not bother.

well nice to see that stating a side to an argument and helping the OP in his decision has been flamed.

For purpose the TT is nothing to drive like a VW Golf. Secondly my opinion of the TT being better than the 330 is my opinion, which whilst you may not aggree with, it is my opinion on both cars and actually owning both cars, not test driving from a garage!

Finally someone of your knowledge would know that the current UK plating system runs from April to April issuing plates on an "0#" plate and a "5#" plate (# = year number). My TT whilst being on the 2004 plate year was infact registered on 20th March 2005, and therefore falling into one of the first batch of TT Sport's on the market.

Finally working your theory that a car with 4wd is not a sports car, then maybe you should inform Audi that their new R8 is infact a "Posh" coupe..
