You guys saying you need a license if you watch live TV, do realize...that you don't right?
Its an act not a law, you have to have a license if you agree with the fact that you need one. That's the point, if you don't agree, you don't need a license, there is jack they can do about it.

Remove there implied right of access and slam the door in there face.

Ah I see, so I can get a rocket launcher which is a prohibited weapon under Section 5, Firearms Act 1968? After all it's an act, not law?

I'll be sure to tell the police, and then the judge, and then the prison guard that.

Oh please....so what if that's an "act", there are also laws so you cant do that without getting punished
There is no laws for TV licenses.

There is no laws for TV licenses.

You seriously believe that?

I think you need to read up on and understand the legal terms that you are so quick to debunk before you make yourself look really, really stupid.

Here would be a good place to start.

LOL at this country requiring a TV license. Such an outdated model, heck they still do a black white TV license IIRC! If it wasn't for my Mrs watching the odd TV show (as its being broadcast) then I would cancel it immediately.

I still can't believe the BBC use Capita to essentially debt collect on their behalf, awful people based on what i've heard. You of course don't have to let them in, and their so called equipment they use to find out of your receiving live TV is complete BS.

Just cancel it OP, just don't answer if they come knocking.

Perhaps I'm wrong, or things have changed, but I always thought you only needed a licence if you were watching or recording something from the bbc which is being broadcasted live? or using a bbc service such as iplayer

Therefore, if you de-tuned your TV to only watch say ITV, you were ok?

No, whilst the BBC may get most of the money, you still need the licence to receive live TV broadcasts.

They can get the police involved because they are above us normal people and get warrant's, they don't care. Thats real problem.

Police assume they are their to help the bbc man gain access to your property which is not the case.

They are supposed to be there to maintain the peace if the TV license man feels threatened.

Unless the guy has a warrant signed by a judge they can't gain access without consent, these warrants are allegedly hard to get which is why most people get taken straight to court.

The BBC is hoping they won't turn up

What shoiuld happen is the police arrest the BBC guy for wasting their time.

If I went to a neighbours to get a ball back from his garden and decided to phone the police in advance because I feel intimidated or whatever you know they would laugh in your face

Hi,

Either way I'm ****** is the way I see it. If I don't allow them in then I will keep getting harrassed. If I do allow them in I doubt they will believe me anyway when I say my TV downstairs is never used and the TV upstairs is my main PC display. The only time I watch TV is on catchup services and even then it's only ever going to be Top Gear or some cooking show whilst I'm eating lol. The TV downstairs I can pass to a relative I suppose but still what is the point of their visit when they ain't going to believe you? Or will they? Anyone ever allowed them in?

This is the sad state of affairs that we are left in, years of scaremongering has left people scared to even exercise their rights.

Call them up and tell them YES you own a TV, you do not watch live television, you use it for PC/game consoles/blu-ray/netflix and watching the non-live content provided on the iplayer, itv player, all4 and demand5

Then get them to confirm as is written in their own harrassment leaflet that if you do not watch live TV you do not need to pay a license fee, once they confirm ask them to cancel your direct debit.

Simple as that, nothing to be scared or afraid of. I've done this in the last 5 properties I've lived in and it stops them (for at least 6 months) sending you threatening leaflets, nobody will come to visit, you are not breaking the law

Indeed, we should probably have a sticky on this, or people could actually go and read what it says on the licencing site.

Personally I find the easiest method is simply to bin the letters, as I like many have informed them only to continue to receive ransom letters.

8 pages of what?

I don't pay for a licence at home.

All I did was to go to the website and say I didn't want one and that I was clear on the rules of not having one. Not heard a squeak about it since.

I got behind on the licence on a different property, got some letters, paid the licence and stopped getting letters.

Clearly I'm special.

Yay, and so it begins...

If I happen to be in I'll let them in.

I've been getting those letters for 2 years.

one even mentioned the newcastle investigation team....

then it went back full circle to the original letters..

if someone knocks ill let them in but there not getting a name

Yep. A licence is required for anything you watch live. If you used it to watch the race after it had finished you'd be OK without a licence.

So if I'm watching a live stream from my favourite Youtube technology channel, are you suggesting that I'd need a "TV license" because I'm watching a live feed?

I've found them pretty good about it to be honest.

Cancelled a few years ago and had 1 visit. I was watching Netflix at the time and the guy somehow hadn't heard of it and I had to show him what it was so he knew it wasn't Live.

This is extremely embarrassing. Knowing what services exist should be the baseline of their knowledge if they're coming to inspect to see whether you "need" a license or not.

I can understand someone having not heard of Netflix if they're not around technology much, but a TVL inspector, that's beyond embarrassing.
