TV Licence Super Thread

Yeah? Says who? Last I checked, we are free human beings on this planet.
No one has any right to force us to pay for it.

You are a human being living in a country with laws.

It's little different to the need to tax your motor vehicle, have insurance for your motor vehicle, or declare it off road.

And the right to travel IS deemed a basic human right (unlike watching TV), however even that right has limits as it doesn't mean you have the right to demand free access to travel provided by others, or drive a car without a licence etc.

Something has to give soon. It must be costing more and more enforcing the TV licence, and of course more and more people are streaming on demand.

I wonder what the situation is with migrants who might stream foreign channels that are not broadcast at all in the UK. From looking at the law, these would require a licence, but I've met a few (i would give nationalities), that don't have one.

So have you actually declared that you do not need a TV licence?

No licence here for almost 2 years. No visits, no monthly letters, but annually I have confirmed online that I dont need a licence which takes all of 20 seconds.

No I have not declared that I don't require a licence. I am not required by law to contract with them either, the onus is on TVL to prove I don't require a licence.

As usual this thread is both interesting and entertaining as most TV licensing threads are.

Simply put, if you don't watch (or stream) live TV on any channel then that's fine and you do not need to pay. If you watch/stream live TV then you need to pay, even if it is not the BBC.

Those who don't abide by this are just ****s and deserve any hassle they get.

I heard a while back that the BBC want to change the law so that even if you just use 'catch up' then you still need a licence, not sure how far they got with that

Yeah! How dare people who simply don't need something complain about being harassed and accused of criminality....

Do you have a Fishing Licence? Do you need one? If you don't, do they send threatening letters and goons around to see why you haven't got one? No. No they don't.

Can a Court send you letter calling you criminal because you simply must be, because they can't find any evidence you aren't?... No. No they can't.

**** the BBC and TVLicensing. **** them. They are a National disgrace, the UK should be ashamed of allowing them to operate.

Well as I said above I haven't needed a licence of over 3 years now and received zero hassle by filling out a simple form online without even having to make a phone call. Minimal effort on my part and next to no inconvenience. Not sure something as rare as a fishing licence quite compares to an appliance that a majority of the houses in Britain have. I really don't know what people who don't use the TV do/don't do to end up in the trouble that you hear about.

Meh, it will just get collected along with council tax soon. It's almost identical to a household tax already.

With the rise of on-demand tv providers, the BBC will need to figure out a new way of raising money. It also needs to stop trying to be a broadcaster of everything.

Hopefully, when that happens the budget (and cost) gets a significant cut. A "public service broadcaster" needs to be defined clearly as well along the lines of what most people would agree with. It is currently a ~£5bn organisation.

What a surprise.

What don't you understand about the two above posts? Do you fish? Care to PROVE that you don't?

How many people in the UK fish.

How many people in the UK watch TV.

Slight difference in the chances of needing a licence, as something like 95% of UK households have/need one, and of the unlicensed properties that are checked apparently about 20% do need one.

It's the same principle though, is it not? Maybe if the rod licence people checked more they'd find 20% of unlicensed homes needing one? You'll be ok for them to check then?

If all it took was 2 minutes of my time to fill out an online form to clarify my rod licence then I wouldn't mind to be honest. For others it would be a serious insult to their privacy and they would intentionally ignore it thus creating more hassle for themselves and a reason to whine on threads such as this one.

I would say that I don't agree with the BBC licence, it should be a sub based service, not mandatory, but as things stand I find peoples reactions bizarre and OTT.

So you've probably spent more time throwing the letters away/inconveniencing yourself not answering the door than it takes to fill in the online form.

Unless you get pleasure in being a massively awkward ******* I can't for the life of me work out why you would waste your own time.

The mentality of complaining about being harassed when deliberately going out of your way to avoid the simplest solution to make it stop. You don't even need to PROVE it in most cases, just tell them you don't and most of the time they leave you alone.
