TV Licence Super Thread

I would hazard a guess it would be cheaper to buy box sets for each season than to pay for a license.

As has been said many times already I wouldn't pay a fee to a biased, politically deplorable and paedophilic supportive corp.

Truth is always there right under your nose look at BBC shareholders and board of directors... Look at who they are or have been affiliated with. Laughable.

Just got a letter today from TV Licensing, a Scheduled visit by an Enforcement Officer. So I gave then a ring, told this guy I don't watch TV, have not done so in years. He asked me a few other questions, about accessing live TV and said OK. Then he asked how long would this be for, I replied that I have no intention of ever watching TV again.
So, I will not not hear anything from them now, for the next 2 years and then I have to go through all the crap again.

They have no legal rights to enter your premises, you don't have to listen to a word they say and have no way to actually detect you are watching TV, short of trespassing and snooping through the window. The enforcement officers are a complete waste of time.

Seriously though, what's the problem, you made a single call, dealt with the issue and don't have to worry for another 2 years. It's hardly going through crap. If this is one of the biggest concerns you have, you're a lucky person.

The crap is after 2 years, I will then be inundated with more reminders and threats. I suppose I should have said "don't have to think about it for another 2 years". The only thing that concerns me is my health and well being, anything else is secondary.

I doubt you'll be inundated, we've had no licence for close to 2 years now, have had 2 letters and 1 visit in that time.

They only hassle people that blank them completely i'd imagine.

Pretty much it.

IIRC the law requires them to make a reasonable effort to enforce the TVL where needed.

2 years is longer than many people live in a property these days, and things do change so checking again after 2 years seems reasonable.

It seems that the people that get the most "hassle" are those who either never respond to let them know they don't need a license and thus the address remains on record as "unknown, needs confirmation", or deliberately bait the TVL in the hope of making some point, or getting views on youtube of a TVL person doing something wrong (usually with careful editing).

Never had a visit. Had a few letters threatening one, but no one turned up.

One letter I got, had something to do with how they go about checking whether or not you have been watching live TV. Even mentioned accessing my computor, to see if I was watching TV via the internet. It was a while ago when I got that letter, so my recollection is a bit vague concerning their process.
The thing with a lot of companies these days, is scare mongering with veiled threats, in the hope people will just pay. As in all likelihood, most will.

I've not heard a peep since cancelling.

I don't watch live TV at all so if they turn up then they're welcome to try and get a broadcast signal. There's no receiver or antenna on my premises. :D

Netflix covers pretty much everything and there's always *cough* Kodi for anything else (although that's rare).

I don't get why some people just try to act smarter when they cancel their license. When we moved in our old place we let them know straight away we don't need a license. A guy showed up like 2 months later, asked nicely to come in, we showed him we don't even own a TV :D He even apologized (spelling? s/z?) for taking up our time. We got a TV and started paying for license another year later.

Moved houses, we're in our current place since August, a guy shows up middle of October.
"bla bla bla this property is unlicensed bla bla bla fines bla bla bla"
"wtf? it's licensed"
apparently goons at TVL didn't change our address on their servers.
a short call later the guy was all red and embarrased, started apologizing like a kid :D
Looks like you can get in trouble even if you actually have a license...
