TV Licence Super Thread

As usual this thread is both interesting and entertaining as most TV licensing threads are.

Simply put, if you don't watch (or stream) live TV on any channel then that's fine and you do not need to pay. If you watch/stream live TV then you need to pay, even if it is not the BBC.

Those who don't abide by this are just ****s and deserve any hassle they get.

Why do you need to record them with your phone? Just ask them leave and close the door.

You don't, but the operatives have been told to instantly leave if they are being recorded.

Go look at how some of the goons behave on some you tube vids, hardily surprising head office does not want yet more footage of how dispicable they can be.

Might be the 4th time you've read this thread, it being a year old and all. :P

this was really useful.

I recently bought a house and we only got internet as we find that if we have live TV we just sit in front of it.

Hence we only watch on demand/catch up i.e. iPlayer Amazon Prime TV

I just registered a declaration that we don't need a licence.

Thank you :)

Basically, only people who seem to get hassle are the ones who look for trouble.

Yeah! How dare people who simply don't need something complain about being harassed and accused of criminality....

Do you have a Fishing Licence? Do you need one? If you don't, do they send threatening letters and goons around to see why you haven't got one? No. No they don't.

Can a Court send you letter calling you criminal because you simply must be, because they can't find any evidence you aren't?... No. No they can't.

**** the BBC and TVLicensing. **** them. They are a National disgrace, the UK should be ashamed of allowing them to operate.

what they should do is what every other company does.

You pay them and you get access to it. like netflix, amazon, nowtv etc etc

They might actually put a bit more effort into their shows then instead of releasing utter crap all the time. I would love to see how well they fair doing it that way.

I doubt you'll be inundated, we've had no licence for close to 2 years now, have had 2 letters and 1 visit in that time.

They only hassle people that blank them completely i'd imagine.

or

Don't let them into yoru home, don't reply to them and don't give them any details. Start recording them as soon as you can with your phone and they usually walk away.

Tough choice

I'm coming after all of you dodgy sods :p

Pay your TV licence. :D

Except the only dodgy part is the BBC making it seem like you need a tv license. Most people pay because they don't want to be bothered with the hassle.

I've had a few people turn up at my address, I just shut the door on them.

I'll sweet talk you, before you know it you'll have paid the licence fee twice and have handed me your car keys. :D

Isn't this in the process of being changed from a TV Licence to a Broadcast Licence so everyone will have to pay it?

It already is effectively, it's required if you watch any TV content live as it's broadcast regardless of if it's viewed via a TV type receiver (cable, satellite, or terrestrial), or over the internet on your PC or tablt.

I think the suggestion is that they remove the loopholes for the likes of catch up TV that let you watch content that was broadcast an hour or two later.

Other suggestions I've seen (and in use in other countries) include things like making it a requirement to get a licence if you own a TV, apply it per household regardless, add it to telecoms bills etc, require the likes of Sky and VM to pass on details of their TV customers (hard to argue that you don't watch live TV if you've got a Sky TV sub).

At the moment the UK is amongst the more lenient in terms of having a TVL or equivalent and how it's collected, as the law currently allows you to basically opt out based on your word, and not via a legal document (which I believe is in use in at least one European country*), and because the law does allow you to opt out easily it actually costs more to enforce than some of the other methods.

*And if you lie on it, you're not just watching TV without the licence, but basically committed perjury or similar.

No licence for 9 years. Threat-o-gram in the post nearly every month addressed to the "Legal Occupier". Maybe a visit once a year but usually when am out.

They not enforcement officers like they are something of the law, they are merely salesmen selling licences for commissions. You do not need to answer the door to them or even speak to them.

I haven't had a tv license for 5 years and never had a visit. They send me a letter every couple of years asking if the situation has changed - notify them that you don't want/need a tv license and you won't have any bother.

The harassment is usually when people don't buy a license but also don't notify them that you don't need one.

Same here.

So have you actually declared that you do not need a TV licence?

No licence here for almost 2 years. No visits, no monthly letters, but annually I have confirmed online that I dont need a licence which takes all of 20 seconds.
