TV Licence Super Thread

Haven't paid a TV licence since the early 2000s. As soon as I went to uni I realised that TV was a waste of time and I could live without it. I don't own a TV set, don't watch or record live TV on the internet, don't watch iPlayer.

Just got my latest no licence declaration through until Aug 2022.

don’t listen to any of the radio stations, when travelling to work, check the weather on the bbc weather site, watch events such VJ Day?

Oh? How many? Source/proof? You might have the odd one or two on here who have said they’re stopping. Not sure that counts as ‘plenty’ though!
It's a 185 page (or fewer for the Alphas) discussion about a TV license. It's littered with people saying the model is dead, the BBC shouldn't force us to pay etc etc.

Really? The TV licence is for television. You don't need one for listening to the radio.

check the weather on the bbc weather site

Are you actually suggesting that I buy a TV licence if I decide to look at the weather on the BBC website?

I use the Met Office site these days anyway, far more reliable.

watch events such VJ Day?

No.

I hear this argument all the time, but if the Government or the BBC are actually concerned about this, they should combine it in with a tax that everyone pays regardless of whether or not you watch TV.

That’s not what he asked though is it?
Anyone here cancelled their TV license out of protest?
I don’t see ‘plenty’ of people HERE who have said they’re cancelling their TV Licence out of protest. Note he also says that he has advised he would be lying by cancelling his TV Licence as he does watch live TV. Do you condone his actions that could (although unlikely I will admit) land him in court?

No people shouldnt be funding a lefty 5th column like the bbc from general taxes

I agree (about it shouldn't be funded from General Taxes) - So what's the best plan?

Privatise BBC and fund it with ADs?

Free to choose a subscription is what i think most people would recommend. You don't have to have AD's but it helps generate a lot of revenue. Otherwise, give people the choice and have a tier type system for the content you want.

Sell off the BBC and all its programs, remove the licence fee and use the remaining money to fund esoteric practices and the development of natural remedies, so they can be better integrated into the NHS.

I knew someone homeless living in ymca. Can you believe he had license inspectors coming to the ymca ask why didnt have a license.
Nope, I do not believe that "Someone homeless living in a YMCA hostel had license inspectors coming to the YMCA to ask why [he?] didn't have a license."

Of course, you may not have meant to say that license inspectors asked why a "homeless" person didn't have a licence to operate a TV

I entirely agree that the BBC should be funded by a ring-fenced tax, outside of Government control. It would save the need for some privatised debt collectors chasing people too mean and selfish to pay.

Let it die or fund it with ads.
It's not the NHS, it's not police, it's not a school.

Its becoming less and less relavent too.

Its dying because its not needed. Like other things where you have a choice to pay, when it fails, its failing for a reason just like all the high street shops.

Netflix, YouTube etc are taking its screen share time. Channel 4 etc have catch up. It's just another dinose

Shouldn't be propped up

I don't think it's even needed. The BBC is telling us they have been a "vital service" during the pandemic, but if they were gone would anyone have really noticed?

There are so many news channels and sites now, all with pretty much the same content. What makes BBC news better than e.g. Channel 4 news or Sky news?

I've never paid either.
Since coming out of uni never paid. Had a TV licence in a house share and still didn't use it.
I used to often sneak a watch of the f1 or spring watch but now f1 is on C4 highlights.

What is it now? 160? No thanks. That's a year and a half of Netflix which Is worth it (even though Im even thinking if I need that now I've watched the good stuff)

Quick one.

Would I need to buy a TV license if I wanted to watch iPlayer on my phone/tablet while visiting my parents' house, or would I be covered by the TV license they have?

The licence covers all usage at the address it's licensed to, whether there is one tv/device or a hundred.
