TV Licence Super Thread

There's no point in it been open, it's the same comments right the way through. No posts for a while then someone posts about a red letter. It's just wasting space in the forum database.

You could argue the same for most of the forum. It is what it is, you don’t have to read or post in it. I actively avoid plenty of sections.

linear tv isn't dead if ITV can motivate 41% of youth to watch i'm a celebrity, just need to push the right buttons, like love island , strictly ...

Roughly a third of Britons are following this year’s I’m a Celebrity series very of fairly closely (32%), increasing to 4 in 10 16-24s (41%).

I still haven't seen how much they+itv spent per license head for the world cup

So I stopped watching TV years ago and after the miss reporting through the independence referendum I said enough with it and I haven't missed day time TV ever. I have put up with having to these crappy confirms that I don't use their services, but now I'm not doing them out of principle and some what out of the time I also take out to have to confirm to them that I'm not a criminal.

I'm now due for a visit from the Edinburgh enforcement branch... Honestly unreal

Anyone remind me what the limits are of these guys, I've heard a lot of horror stories at time about them thinking they can enter the house and such and I'm well aware they are a civil organisation with such powers and they have to raise a civil case here in Scotland to take you to court.

They are effectively salesmen so have very little rights. In England on a normal visit they cannot enter your home without your permission which you do not have to grant. You do not have to give them any information, they cannot look around unless you give permission and again you can refuse. They are not allowed to look at password protected devices. They do have an implied right of access to walk down your drive and knock on the door. You can officially remove this implied right of access at which point they cannot knock on the door without trespassing. They will likely try to get your name but legally you do not need to provide your name to remove access rights.

In short, treat them like any salesman who knocks on your door trying to sell junk. The only exception being if they have a court order usually backed up with a policemen. In which case check the order is signed by a judge and there will be a list of what they can and cannot do. Normally they still cannot search password protected devices. Court orders are very rare and require evidence for them to get the order.

It might be worth double checking there are no differing rules for Scotland.

I stopped paying TV license as I haven't watching live TV now for some 5+ years, I filled out their form that makes also makes me state I'm happy to let them in to check, but like others have said I won't be doing that and will just close the door on them.

Apparently I need a TV license to watch live NASA feed on Youtube. No :)

It's not 'apparently' unfortunately. You do require a TV licence if you are watching any live content: https://www.tvlicensing.co.uk/check-if-you-need-one.

You need to be covered by a TV Licence to watch programmes live on any online TV service - such as ITVX, All 4, Amazon Prime Video, Now TV or Sky Go. You don’t need a TV Licence if you only ever watch on demand programmes on any TV service apart from BBC iPlayer.

is there not a Grey area in what is a TV service, as i'm pretty sure Youtube would claim to be a Hosting service not a TV service

It does allow streaming live streams.

If you watch live on streaming services (e.g. ITVX, All 4, YouTube, Amazon Prime Video, Now, Sky Go), or use BBC iPlayer*, you need to be covered by a TV Licence.

You don’t need a TV Licence if you never watch live on any channel, TV service or streaming service, or use BBC iPlayer*. On any device.
*A licence is not needed to watch S4C programmes on demand.

It really is straight forward if you read the Gov UK tv licence pages.
