Wtf?

An antenna connected to a TV is "evidence" of a crime over there?

That's some serriously dystopian **** if you are serious.
Yep. If you have a TV with an aerial connected to it and the visiting salesman is allowed into your house, and then allowed to turn the TV on, then it can it be used as evidence to prosecute you.

Great isn't it.

That's why you never let them in or discuss anything with them. You could be completely innocent and never watch TV but still be prosecuted if you let them in and forgot the aerial is attached. Instead, close the door firmly in their face.

However in this case it sounds like the OP genuinely needs a license so should just buy one and go about his business.

You can only watch BBC iplayer if you log in with email address and password. If you've logged in they know you are watching plus ip address, which also give your precise location. That is the evidence they use in court.
They can only get the physical location for that IP address if your ISP volunteers it or they apply for a court order to force the ISP to provide it. If they only have an IP address and no idea if that physical address is licensed then they have no grounds to get a warrant to force the ISP to give the physical address.

I'm a bit drunk so there may be a flaw in my thinking but pretty sure that's the case.

Like I said before I dare say there’s a lot of people in this exact thread that needs a licence but they are playing ignorant saying they don’t need one when they really do.

And would they have to prove your WiFi wasn't hacked...

I assume they could employ browser cookies , or other tracking , so if Amazon, say, knows the address/account, most likely associated with an IP address and there is an Iplayer access. .. Do not pass Go ....

Which, unless you specifically agree to its use for this purpose will be illegal under the computer misuse act.

Used to follow this thread here for the chuckles before joining :)

Its crazy the law around UK TV license is allowed to be so ambiguous, in their favour too :( Pure scaremongering and disgusting practise IMHO.

like many here I don't need a TV license for my usage, single guy, no family/kids, if I did that might be different, but I can watch TV on the odd occasion lawfully by streaming or my Blu Ray collection (stupid law I know) BUT ... I went through the anarchist stuff like many here for the Jollies and to waste their time to for a while LOL.

I was always hoping for a visit to do the doorstep video challenge Mexican stand-off thing and debate with them and post my results on Youtube, but despite ... lordie knows? how many letters, red envelope ones the lots and promises of visits that never happened, not once did they visit to entertain me and let me use the results on my Youtube channel Grrrrrrr.

However, maybe 9 months + ish ago, got fed up of the constant letters still ... honestly, enough there to paper a small room ... its crazy!! so let them know online I don't need a licence, it was surprisingly easy and since then 9+ months, not a cheep out of them apart from the initial acknowledgment from them that I don't need a license ... there was some blurb about them checking in a couple of years again if I still don't need one and if I feel like winding them up and wasting their time again at time I will ... we'll see.

And before someone chimes in they have done this too and still get the letters and harassment ... I fully believe you, they are so inept its beyond belief.
Its just bonkers this whole TV Licensing debacle is still allowed to continue in this day and age ... massive change is LONG overdue IMHO ... Happy New License Free Year All ... dont let them bully or intimidate you, most here are savvy I know, but some and especially elderly pre free licence age are not.

After reading wired article on possibility for Amazon to give authorities footage from ring doorbells (of the tv inspectors turning up at an IP address thought to evade license ?)
that would provide compelling conviction evidence.

What does Ring have to do with anything?
