TV Licence Super Thread

I've not paid TVL for 8 years now. I get a letter addressed to 'the occupier' every month and the odd visit twice a year or so. Usually when I'm out and so it's just a threat-o-gram through letterbox with hand written address on.

What I really want to know is if all the big boy hard men who threatened to cancel their TV licence when Clarkson got sacked have actually carried their threat out. These are the people who are most likely to get fined as they don't know how the system works.

You shouldn't need to ditch the TV, just get rid of the cable to the aerial socket so it's obvious enough you only have devices connected, though if you don't use it for anything then it would be easier to get rid entirely I suppose and give someone else the benefit of it

Yup, this. Happened to my dad a few years ago. He moved house and didn't bother with a license since we were just watching a few DVDs. Tv licence guy came round, we just showed him that we didn't have an aerial connection and explained - he then noted this on the system. Never heard from them again.

This of course is the non-'gun ho' approach. Since they have no legal right to enter your property you could take the alternative approach of telling them some swearies or even punching them. Doesn't really seem necessary though :p

Never paid it, get a letter once a month goes straight in the shredder. Had one woman from tvl ring my bell so opened the door while filming her on my phone. She ran off for some reason.

Or you could have just told her politely that you didn't require a TVL and left it at that?

Good for you though?

Odd isn't the way some people go on. Most the idiots that I have read or heard about having a problem with TVL are the morons who try to make a big deal out of nothing or ignore letters rather than taking 2 minutes of their precious time to respond.

I also find that funny. I submitted the online form, got a refund of what I had paid for (dd's seem to have you pay 6 months in advance), and that was the end of it, so far at least.

If they do come knocking on the door, I'm happy to let them in. Every TV, except the one in the lounge, even has the aerial still connected. They don't work though as the way the signal was routed through the house required the use of a sky box in the lounge anyway, which is no longer there. Heck, I still even have a BT vision box hooked up to one TV for the on demand services.

I also forgot to mention, hopefully too many people don't cancel their TV licences. Most of the Western world have similar charges, often more expensive. And some applied in a different way.

For example, Sweden moved their ~£250 fee over to having internet. Realistically, that is the way it will eventually go in this country, then we are all screwed.

I cancelled my license a couple of years ago because I genuinely don't need it. I declared it all on their website but the letters keep coming every month or so. They changed from "are you sure you don't need a license?" to "you need a license" to "you are being investigated" at arbitrary points and now I just bin them without opening.

People who cancel tv licence why not just let them in show them you don't use the tv to warrant paying and be done?

Well at least according to this thread, letting them in doesn't stop TVL harassing you, it just halts it for 1-3 years before they start again.

You should be able to remove BBC channels from your package if you're Sky/Virgin.

Actually, if I stick to Sky channels and never watch BBC, do I need a licence?

If I was in the UK and such a situation popped up, I'd simply not let them in/tell them to **** off from my property.

You surely have the right to refuse access to your home to someone who's not welcome there? Unless they have a court order they can stick their inspection up between their butt cheecks imo :D.

Same way I handle debt collectors. I don't feel obliged to waste my time and breath on them and will ignore them or tell em to bugger off.

Yes, because you are watching live TV :p

That's because you are a hard man, brap brap.

Definitely, you should see my face :D.

It's the way I handle debt collectors ( for example them trying to inn a speeding fine from Germany) , the apes hired by the employer to check if you're ''really'' ill, and other unwanted parasites. Either tell them to go away, or ignore them, I refuse to conform to some things, these things being one of em.

Best way is probably ignoring them though and binning the letters.
