TV Licence Super Thread

I didn't have a tv at my old address and never got bothered once, I now have Sky and obviously a TV for it and pay for my licence by direct debit yet have had four visits since March last year!

It's getting tedious now, I told the last twonk he was welcome to come in and check my TV, but it would be wiser to double check his records as both of my German Shepherds were in the living room and I wasn't going to move them for him :p he started spouting some crap about me "obstructing him in his line of duty" !?! I told him to do one and shut the door.

Two days later a different one is back at my door and wasn't satisfied when I showed him my licence details on my phone!

Clueless and incomprehensibly inept, were it not for my daughter and GF I'd be back without a licence in a flash, I just don't watch TV these days.

TVL was a nightmare during Uni when staying in flats. You'd typically move in around September, which the first letter would arrive about then. Then by Christmas you were sent another letter saying you've not responded, blah-blah something about legal action. Then I think the next letter was around March saying the same thing as at Christmas. Then by May you had a final letter informing you that a TVL agent would be round to check you're not watching TV at some point. By June, Uni had finished for the year and you had moved out.

Then they start again.

I didn't know anyone in my building who paid for a TV license, yet they all watched it.

Just fill in the form on the web to say you dont have a TV.

https://www.tvlicensing.co.uk/cs/no-licence-needed/index.app

They stop sending you letters for 2 years if you do that. I don't understand why this is 5 pages complicated.

Read the below post. If they can't get it right for people who DO have a license, then are you surprised some people have issues when they don't need or want one?

so? they give you a reference number. just tell them to do one if they turn up at the door and rip up the fake letters of threatening. I don't see anything in the quoted post to say he told them he didn't need one.

Just send them a bill for your time.

20/06/1996 open letters and read letters 10 mins
...
10/01/2015 open letters and read letters, throw in bin @ new rate + vat + surcharge (24%)

Surcharge is for costs. they can can send payment directly i accept visa and mastercard, direct debit is £15 per month extra.

Why is this always blown so out of proportion? If you don't require a license just fill in the form online to declare so and if you do require one then just buy one

I've always done either of the above and I've never had any issues, wherever I've lived.

The proportion is blown on this subject as they consistently get it so wrong.

I have a license. They think I don't and pester me about it, when I didn't have neither tv nor license (but never bothered with the on line form) I had no visits whatsoever.

TVL - One very incompetent organisation!

independent article.

£160.00 (potentially) for a BBC mandatory charge, irrespective of whether I actually use any of their services or not? **** off.

I know this is pencilled in for a long ways away, but there's no way I'm willing to pay a service charge for something I don't use.

I agree, it is hardly an 'Essential Service'. They could easily switch to Encryption and get their Licence Fee via a Subscription based model, this would actually be better for everyone as those that don't need a TV Licence won't get any more hassle (Lol, yeah..right!). Of course the BBC are terrified of this Payment model as people will wise-up and just turn to Catch-Up and leave the BBC high and dry, but forcing everyone to pay for it is absolutely disgraceful.

Would just add myself to the list of people that have so far had no issues.

Had a license at last place, moved into new place to immediate red letters from TVL which stopped shortly after transferring over our old license to the new place. When that lapsed I didn't renew as we have no aerial and don't watch any live TV, I filled out the form online and haven't heard anything since.

Will probably get the aerial that's in the loft hooked up at some point and take out another license. Seems ok to me.

Considering how long and expensive the transition to digital broadcasting was, encrypting some of the most-watched channels in Britain would just cause problems all over again. Not to mention how it might effect the BBC's remit as a public broadcaster.

I have never had an issue with the logistics. All seems to run smoothly. Never had a visit or a threatening letter. Moved house a fair amount, even had a TVL in a couple of blocks of student accommodation.

I begrudge paying it these days, but in the grand scheme of things the cost is not a lot compared to my other annual outgoings.

But a compulsary charge for all households? Good luck whichever government tries to introduce that! Indeed, I don't think they will be able to, unless via the back door. So come the mid 2020's everyones council tax bill will mysteriously increase by £150 a year! :p
