Just fill in the form on the web to say you dont have a TV.

https://www.tvlicensing.co.uk/cs/no-licence-needed/index.app

They stop sending you letters for 2 years if you do that. I don't understand why this is 5 pages complicated.

Thanks for this. I filled in my online form last April and never got a visit but wondered how long it lasted.

I agree, this isn't complicated at all, fill out a form online - done and dusted. If you are worried about visits - print out the confirmation you get at the end of the online form and show them it.

yea give them your identity so they can take you to court unless you fully cooperate with them like some criminal on a plea bargain

did you give your details to the fishing license people informing them you no longer have a rod and reel? did you let them come into your house? did you let them search for a rod?

just had the DVLA around mine checking if I owned a car, now waiting for HRMC who are coming around to check my assets and make sure I haven't got any dodgy money stashed under my mattress.

people don';t see how ridiculous it is that you have to inform someone you don't own a TV so they don't sign you up to their service?

The whole fact that you are clearly considered GUILTY until proven innocent stinks! this is not how law in our country is supposed to work.

the police do not come around and check your house to make sure you haven't commited a crime, this is not minority report the bbc should kindly **** off

How do we know the bbc aren't selling everyones details to telemarketers and research companies? we all know this is the kind of details facebook, google etc love because you can make profit from it

Saw a Top Gear episode the other day smashing up a couple of Peugeots. Why should my hard earned cash go towards 3 ***** amusing themselves on TV.

Another reason why I don't pay the TVL.

This is an awful analogy, the police arrest people (ergo assume guilt) all the time

They charge enough for the TV license, yet they want to take away BBC 3.

It's a complete rip off.

Really?

£145 a year for all of the BBC's content is pretty damn cheap with or without BBC Three (and they don't want to take it away but move it online). That is £12 a month, compare that to people paying £25 a month just for Sky Sports or 16.50 a month just for Sky Movies.

They should move to a subscription based model which should include catch-up.

May I suggest you read the BBC's charter (set by the government, the BBC don't write it).
Read up on the definition of a Public Service Broadcaster (something that most western countries have in some form or another, including the U.S.).

Then look at why the idea of an encrypted system would go against pretty much everything a PSB is meant to do.

It would also be almost impossible to do encryption for the radio services in a manner that was in any way economical and didn't involve scrapping tens of millions of devices* (including most/all car stereos), we've had DAB for over 10 years n the UK, and the number of devices that have that are tiny (and for cars almost non existant), and going encryption would be a bigger/more costly issue than normal DAB (which is already not popular).

*Probably closer to hundreds of millions of devices would lose functionality, given how many things have a radio in them (ranging from basic radios that start at 99p, to car radios, stereo systems, home theatre/surround systems, mobile phones, mp3 players).

I don't really like paying for TV licence as I don't care about any bbc service that much. However I will pay it but I can't really afford it next month when it's due.

Am I right that if I don't pay it and ignore the letters then pay it when I can afford to in a month or two that it back pays and starts from when it last expired or not?

You can pay by direct debit.

No one cares about the charter, it's an outdated model suited to the 50's, not 2015 when we have the internet and ad free digital steaming services.

Decided I'm not going to renew TV licence from now. (expired end of March) have told the gf to make her decision.
Really only watch channel 4 stuff and their new all4 service looks good.

Dunno whether to tell them or ignore the letters.

Is there any drawback to informing them or not?

Mainly don't want to pay due to BBC being irrelevant (especially live)

For a few years I got a letter from them at least once a month from them. Never got a visit. I finally got round to telling them I don't have a tv and haven't heard anything from them since.

TVL was a nightmare during Uni when staying in flats. You'd typically move in around September, which the first letter would arrive about then. Then by Christmas you were sent another letter saying you've not responded, blah-blah something about legal action. Then I think the next letter was around March saying the same thing as at Christmas. Then by May you had a final letter informing you that a TVL agent would be round to check you're not watching TV at some point. By June, Uni had finished for the year and you had moved out.

Then they start again.

I didn't know anyone in my building who paid for a TV license, yet they all watched it.

Receiving 4 letters over the course of a year is a "nightmare" ?

Jesus I should sue the local Chinese takeaway for crimes against humanity they drop a menu through at least once a month

i laughed!

Its the GF i worry about. If they come round and its just her last thing i want is them tricking her into saying something that isnt true. Even though the tv will be disconnected

I'm tempted to get rid of the TV licence, myself. The only thing I watch live these days is the news in the morning while getting out of bed. I think I'll be better served with a DAB radio and Radio4.

If you do go legally licence free just spend a few minutes filling in the on-line form. You don't have to give any personal details and you can register with a disposal email addy.

This will stop all letters and visits. Just a few minutes and no personal details - sounds good, huh?

:)

Not quite true sadly. They're likely to still send someone round to confirm that what you have said is true.

When I filled in the online form they sent someone round maybe three weeks later. 5 minutes later he was gone and we've heard nothing from them since.

All very easy really. But no doubt some people will make it far more difficult for everyone involved out of some matter of principle.

It must vary from region to region. I did the above and haven't heard a peep since doing so (although we did get two visits after we moved into our new place before I filled the online forms in. I may or may not have told the """"""""inspector"""""""" to **** off though lel!!)
