Type R and VTEC owners

I am about to try to sell my 2010 Civic Si I purchased new. Didn't realise this thread was here :p

I sat in a 9th Gen Civic and CRZ yesterday at Manchester Honda

I really like the Civic interior, its really comfy and the dash feels much more solid over the 8th Gen, I'm really starting to like it but the 1.8 petrol just isn't powerful enough

The CRZ I didn't like at all, the shiny plastics made it feel cheap, over the top and it wasn't as nice a place to be as the Civic

I was a massive fan of the CRX but the CRZ is just a massive like down. The styling is rubbish and its over priced. It has an identity crisis, wants to be sporty but its more eco-warrior. I personally would have a Honda Jazz over it, they have almost the same performance.

smokedog same here.... Biggest let down is.... Lack of power.

When Nathan took me around Donington in hes CRZ. Its like You floor it all the time with no danger what so ever.

If I had a good b16 CRX i would not swap it for new CRZ...
Only person that driven good old CRX with 170+hp will know what im on about and my mate had b18c6 swap in hes.

Those things are mental :P

Don't you have a CRZ if you are looking for good MPG and don't care what your car looks like? :p

As a CRZ owner I can shed some truth about the car and how it is misinterpreted in many ways.

it is not an eco car, despite all the BS Honda feed you, it isn't as economical as you are led to believe. However this isn't really exclusive to the CRZ.

It is not a fast car in a straight line.

It handles very well and has quite a playful chassis when provoked.

It does not make financial sense. It isn't practical, not that economical and not that fast.

However it is quirky and still very cheap to run. Equipment levels are good and it is a good "every day" car to drive, thanks to the hybrid system, torque levels are nice and never feels like is gasping for more power during normal commuting.

I bought mine for a few reasons:

a) I wanted something new
b) I hate having common cars, I like to be different
c) I needed not to crash again
d) I began to resent sub 20MPG mid 90's car ownership

For 90% of people the CRZ doesn't make sense as on paper it never seems to acheive either one of it's intended goals.

I won't try and convince people they are the best as they aren't, most people who will consider one, are silly like me.

I like the way it looks but that is subjective!

It seems very likely I'm going for a Type-R next, I could do with some good, honest advice...

My car history; EP3 Type-R, MK5 Golf R32, Impreza WRX STI, Astra VXR Nurburgring

My reason for moving back to a Type-R is mostly finance related as I want (need :( ) to downgrade, but I am looking forward to that high revving goodness again.

I have fond memories of my old EP3 and when I took a drive of the FN2 this year, was left a little disappointed in performance, but did appreciate it would be a better car to live with given it's more modern and plus they look well with the 19" Rages on (+GP kit), despite the hard ride.

A few questions really;

  • Honestly, EP3 or FN2? If we remove the performance/weight discussion, would that change anyones opinion?
  • If I paid more for a CW edition or later model, does the LSD really make that car that much better? Is it worth the premium from a £8K FN2 to £10K+?
  • Milano red, my old EP3 was this colour and ultimately turned orangey-pink. If I did go for a Milano on FN2 or EP3, would a machine polish reveal the nice milano colour again?
  • I'm aware of some of the common issues with the FN2 (rusty roof/doors behind seals, notchy gear change). Did the EP3 have any common faults? Mine was solid but I had one when they were new out.
  • Finally, in my position, what would you do? I need something <£8000, a bit of fun, 10min daily commute and a grocery shopper for the weekend.

If I did get an FN2, I will be getting a Martelius, as I went out in a CW edition with one fitted and loved the sound, despite the lack of torque we all know.

Cheers :)

You're selling your car to buy a car to mod it to save money, to me that makes no sense

I sold my FN2 because of rust and common niggly issues that irritated me, if you easily find an excuse to sell up and buy a replacement car (Like I do) then you either wont last long with an FN2 or you'll put thousands into it trying to improve it, Honda, especially Civics are just adult lego

Appreciate your input. Don't get me wrong, I'm not setting out to mod anything other than swap the exhaust out.

Clearly I'm buying a cheaper car and already appreciate I'm making sacrifices.

What did you go to from the FN2 out of curiosity?

I now have an Accord Type-S, someone made me an offer I couldnt refuse on the FN2 so I gladly took it and free'd up a few pennies whilst I was at it but I've held off modding the Accord, its been hard and I've nearly bought wheels, suspension etc etc numerous times but so far I've held off

Use your FN2 budget on a DC5? Less depreciation than an FN2 ;)

Or considering your commute is only 10mins, buy an Elise and cycle to work :p
