UbiSoft servers down today = No single player gaming

They wouldn't make anywhere near as much money (nor enough to actually continue making games).

It's basically the difference between the indie band selling their music from their car boot and website to a major pop band with a record label.

The pop band may be manufactured crap but they will sell millions more than the little band.

Nonsense, it is a viable model, self publishing is they way most Flightsims are going. Eagle Dynamics with DCS Black Shark and Lock On: FC2 for example. There is Live for speed also.

Yeah now go and ask the average person whether they've heard of any of those games....then you'll find out why most companies use publishers.

Certainly I agree they aren't well known, but to suggest that self publishers would go out of business through lack of sales is incorrect. Also the quality of self published titles tends to be higher in my experience.

They would if their games cost anywhere near as much to develop as main stream games do...

Starting to see Ubi ip's being posted on the different pirate sites encuoraging others to DDOS them now that Ubi have claimed the UK servers went down due to an attack. I know nothing of DDOS and can only assume Ubi will be well protected but it would certainly be amusing to see them brought to their knees :)

I can't log in game as I get "Incorrect username or password" error. I had to come here to get the latest info regarding their servers as their forum and website appears to having difficulties. I know one thing for certain and that is I will not be getting the authorized Ubisoft version of the new Splinter Cell. This could not have gone any worse for them.

"95 per cent of players were not affected, but a small group of players attempting to open a game session did receive denial of service errors,"

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2010/03/08/ubisoft_anti_drm_hack_attack/

So apparently only 5% of people were affected by this DDOS attack as they claim now.

I smell BS in this.
What the bets they didn't even have a DDOS attack and it was just there servers that couldn't cope with the load or something...

Saying it was a DDOS attack could be just an easy way for them to shift the blame to someone else..

I feel sorry for the people who have paid for this game and can't play it as a result of either the servers collapsing under the load or the servers crashing as a result of a DDOS attack. However, I'm glad this is happening now as there has to be a line drawn somewhere with DRM as it's getting to be ridiculous. I only hope that publishers realise this is a result of heavy handed DRM and not down to all PC gamers being pirates and leading to publishers no longer publishing games for the PC market.

how ridiculous - my DVD of SH5 arrived in post today - that I paid GOOD money to buy

and I can't even register...

therefore cannot in anyway play what I've bought ! how absolutely ridiculous

I have the same problem. I just wish there was a crack for AC2 so that I could be done with this nonsense.

Stopping the payload from a DDOS attack is quite difficult.

You can lock down any traffic/ports, unsolicited connections, etc. that you don't need as much as possible, keep firmware, drivers, etc. updated but after that it becomes about managing the flood. The first step of which is usually to start setting up distributed barriers to blackhole traffic from far flung places before it all hits one weak point, but this takes time and coordination tho eased a bit in this case in that you can narrow traffic down to i.e. UK traffic for the UK servers, tho this would block out anyone from the UK trying to use their game while abroad.

What stopping you from registering ?

I couldn't register as the registration servers seemed down or intermittant

finally managed to register after 30 minutes

got into game

then I had to alt-tab to read an email - game disappeared - so had to restart it ..

and now can't get back in as cannot connect with the authentication server (DRM) aaaaaargh

I really want to buy this game badly...(I even started a thread a few months ago http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18097340 )

But all these DRM problems being reported are really putting me completely off buying it..

Think of it like an MMO, stability wise they are not worth buying until 2-4 weeks after the game releases.

SKIDROW apparently have a fully working crack that hasn't been leaked out of the scene yet but it's hard to tell how much truth is in that. None of them make the cracks for the general public but it's unusual for it not to have leaked yet as they apparently had it done two days ago. Pinch of salt methinks.

The terrible thing about this all is that everyone is talking about the drm and not AC2 which to my surprise is actually very good. This is coming from someone whom did not like the first one. I just wish I could play the ruddy thing.
