Ubuntu 9.10 available now!

My LCD runs at 120Hz. The way it used to work, if xorg.conf didn't include the exact vert and horiz frequencies then refresh rates above 60Hz would not be available to select in the GUI.

(Even my previous 19" LCD ran at 75Hz at 1280x1024)

Actually i think i saw 75hz in the options on mine but its old so i don't mess with defaults, do wish i had a better monitor now though, im sure contrast and colours have improved quite a bit. :(

Installed 9.10 on my laptop last night. I like it very much, seems to be more polished than 9.04, the default theme is nice. Everything worked out of the box for me. Although I was disappointed with the boot time I thought they decreased it by a bit more from 9.04. I think my boot times longer now. The shutdown is vey quick though, at under 5 seconds most times :D

The software centre does it's job but it's navigation is not good at all. They tried to do the apple breadcrumbs like in iTunes and their webistes but it's not the best. I also found installing applications from it far slower than synaptic so I seen myself going back to it after a while. I love the new way of adding PPAs with just a link, it's far faster, no more keys to add manually.

I will be installing it on my main rig tonight which is running 9.04 on a SSD. If 9.10 is just as fast I'll be happy :)

Was going to update to 9.10 from 9.04 via the update manager, but decided on a clean install instead.

But WOW! Is the boot up process quick as hell, under 20 secounds! Bearing in mind I'm using a normal HDD (WD Caviar Blue 250GB). Maybe its something to do with GRUB2 and EXT4.

The installer has gotten a lot user friendly too, especially the partitioner. Ubuntu is getting better and better on every release.

Just a tip if you want a fast download, download it via torrent.

Of to play with Koala now :)

How do I change the login screen? I'm not digging the new one TBH. I did it with 9.04 but can't remember how. The Login Window applet doesn't give you that option.

In 9.04 you used to be able to change your login screen from Administration->login screen. But it's not there in 9.10, a quick google around and I found that it has been changed and its no longer simple to install GDM's :(

System > Admin > Login > Local

On 9:04 anyway. Haen't upgraded yet... Still copying over my music dir to capture (NTFS) drive

That won't work in Karmic. They changed GDM to allow faster booting. It is possible to get GDM back (see below link) but the nifty little Gnome tool that allowed you to change the GDM theme is gone it seems. A bit annoyed by this personally, as I use my GDM greeter to access other machines via XDMCP. I'll now have to edit some configs to get this working again...

I'm loving Virtualbox. I can play around with all sorts of distros without worrying about trashing anything. Currebtly playhing with 9.10 to see what it's like :)

yes gentlemen I am really liking the 9.10 version
pretty much straight out of the box

wireless works
sound works
I can get compiz to work and I'm loving the effects!

Now I am working out how to work in the linux world

1. how to play fm2010 - might virtual machine this

2. Install a similar media player to winamp so I can play all my media.

3. An alternative to daemon tools if a linux one isn't available.

4. how to get my two tv cards to work

1. Haupauge HVR 1100 DVB-T
2. Phillips Conexant DVB-S tuner

If I can get all the above working I think I could use this as my main OS :)

I tried this today and then remembered I am using a USB network adapter so I can't access the internet from Ubuntu :o

I don't suppose there is any Linux driver for a DM9000 USB NIC is there?

(I can access the net if I use VirtualBox obviously, but I wanted to check out the 3D effects and stuff which AFAIK you can't do virtually.)

2 things and I would make a permanent switch to Ubuntu.

1. Adobe programs - Photoshop, Flash etc.
2. Football Manager and Steam

If I could use these on Ubuntu, Windows would be dead to me.

CS2 works in wine. Not really a solution for pro users but unless you have money falling out of your arse (in that case you could buy a machine just for photoshop anyway) why would a home user spend hundreds of pounds for photoshop ?

Flash works no probs anyway

ive only been using ubuntu 9.04 for a few days, i have never used linux before but i really like it, if it was more compatible i would definately switch over to it.

I just upgraded to 9.10 and so far have had some major issues regarding flash. After the upgrade I ran firefox and noticed flash wasn't working, not only that, but both synaptic package manager and ubuntu updater refused to work because they detected an error with adobe-flashplugin. Took me ages to figure out how to remove the old package and get everything working right.

Started the upgrade on my Xubuntu 9.04 install now.

Will be interested in switching to GRUB 2 if this means I can move /boot into my big ext4 partition.
