UEFA Champions & Europa League Football Thread ** spoilers ** [12th - 14th December 2023]

you dont have a better chance of qualifying through the prem league though, newcastle wont get top 4

We could still get Europa next season though, and with a deeper squad. It doesn't have to be Champions League. Like we're saying, we're ahead of schedule getting 4th last season. These things take time.

you didnt just come up short though

you won one out of 6, you cant expect to go through skin of your teeth when you dont win your games and trying to rely on others

In the "Group of Death", and it should have been two wins, let's face it. The only game in this campaign where I thought we should have done better was Dortmund at home.

its not coming up short you was edging your bets on another matches result, you were basically betting on it not going the way it did (Call it the Tonali effect)
Man I’m not going to argue for weeks. Had enough of that over the Gordon goal.

Here’s the definition of coming up short.

fail to reach a goal or standard.
"we're so close to getting the job done, but we keep coming up short"

came up short against PSG and failed to hold onto our lead tonight.

Yeah, you came up short. A long way short. You finished last.

That’s not “just coming short” or the more commonly used phrase “coming up just short” which implies some kind of near miss.

2 points short? Seriously go look at the Oxford dictionary. “Keep coming up short”

Peace out

”keep coming up short” is about right, you did, keep coming up short. That means some inherent flaw or deficit that results in repeated failure.

That phrase does not have the same meaning as “just coming“ or “coming up just short” which means a near miss.

Anyway, English lecture over. Enjoy your evening. :)

Just back from the match and naivety springs to mind, AC Milan knew how to get the job done and we didn’t. AC knew when to put in a tactical foul to break up the play and we didn’t. We have to learn from this and im 100% certain we will.
This is it like. I feel in all but the PSG home game we have been schooled in the ways of european football by three sides that have so much more experience at this level.

Pleased that we're out in all honesty - we can take solace that we beat PSG but I think enough's enough and we can take great pride that we've managed to mix with the big boys in the most difficult group.

At this point we might aswell get Howe getting a run out for 20 mins as our squad depth is simply not there and given our close rivals have improved we need to knuckle down back in the league pronto. If you had told us when Howe took over and we would be playing UCL football in the short timeframe I would have laughed in your face.

Thing is, we’ve been called deluded for the last however many years for “thinking we’re a big club”, and now we’re getting slammed for being realistic about our chances given the squad depth and injury situation. Can’t win.
Adidas has classified us as an Elite club. That’s a step above big club
