UEFA Champions & Europa League Football Thread ** spoilers ** [16th - 18th Feb 2021]

They need a reset and maybe Messi leaving will enable them to do that - it'll certainly give them a bit of relief financially to plan for the future at least.

I've heard crazy things about his contract. Sounds like he is paid an insane amount of money that would pay for the wages of 3-4 world class players.

He is paid an insane amount of money and is one of the reasons why Barca arent very good at the moment. They need to get rid and invest elsewhere.

His wages and signing on fee reportedly come close to 100m euros per season, with image rights on top of that.

Outrageous amount of money. I imagine he's on close to 3 mil a week.

If anyone signs him for a similar amount in the summer then they are just stupid tbh.

What he earns in image rights isn't really a cost to Barca (or any new side) as that's effectively a cut of the money Barca make by selling Messi branded merch. It's massive money but he's earned it. He's arguably the greatest player that's ever played the game, winning Barca countless trophies, earning them hundreds of millions in prize money and massively growing Barca commercially too.

I hate the "he'll pay for that in shirt sales alone" argument but Messi is one of a few players that will make a significant difference to a club commercially, particularly to a smaller club (relatively speaking) like PSG or City. He might not earn them £2m per week but he'll earn them a sizeable proportion of that and if that leads to the growth of that club for years to come, it could ultimately be a profitable deal for them.

I've lost count of the amount of times people have said City will be unstoppable over the last 6-7 years. It never works out quite as simply as that. There's a lot of clubs in the PL with money and enough top players to go around that other clubs will compete with them.

When Pep arrived and City produced their 100 point season nobody was supposed to be able to compete and then the next season Liverpool went neck and neck with them and then beat them last season with City dropping well off the pace. City of this season won't nearly reach the heights of City of 17/18 & 18/19 and I'm not sure they will next season either, even if they were to sign Haaland and Messi. Peak Aguero was better than Haaland is and just how big an impact will a 34 year old Messi make?

Haaland's only 20 and has ridiculous numbers already. He might not be as good as peak Aguero yet but his ceiling is much higher. Two footed, great in the air and ridiculously fast for his size. Don't think he suits City but he'll be unstoppable wherever he plays. I'd take him at Liverpool in a heartbeat.

I think you're doing Aguero a disservice in saying Haaland's ceiling is much higher than what Augero achieved. The likes of Ronaldo and Suarez produced a couple of seasons at a higher level than him but them aside, he's consistently produced at the top level for 9/10 seasons now. He should be being discussed alongside Shearer and Henry as the best forward in the PL era (in terms of level & longevity). If Haaland can reach that level he'd have done very well imo.

Should? I think he is already the best in the PL era given his goals to games ratio but I've never considered him the best in the world at any point in his career. Haaland's got a better chance of achieving that as well as being a contender for the Ballon d'Or imo.

I said should because he's rarely mentioned in the debate - it's always Shearer & Henry. As for Haaland's potential, I think we need to see more than 12 months in the Bundesliga before we start giving him Ballon d'Or's.

Peak Aguero is easily one of the best strikers in PL history. Hes just been a bit forgotten due to injures I feel.

With regards to Haaland, if I could take any striker in world football right now it would be him. He is insane at the moment, tall, super quick, strong, two footed and clinical. I think his game is pretty well rounded as well. He likes to break on defences but he is also good from a cross and his positional awareness is top notch. Whoever takes him off Dortmund at the end of the year will have done a great bit of business IMO.

Haaland is one of the best finishers I've ever seen at that age. It's almost robotic at times.

You can tell how good a striker is by how confident you are they will finish a chance. Haalands is easily up there with the best in that regard. You see him break through on goal and you just know that ball will end up in the net. Contrasts with the like of Rashford who routinely miss chance after chance that they should be tucking away.

Any cash rich club should be looking to sign Mbappe or Haaland. They’re both phenomenal for their age.

Haaland is outperforming Mbappe in a much better league and at a club that isn't having the best season. Mbappe is playing in a farmers league in a team that is realistically head and shoulders about any other in the league. I know which one I think it better and which one I would take.
