UEFA Champions & Europa League Football Thread ** spoilers ** [18th - 20th April 2023]

I love De Gea, been an amazing keeper for us and had some incredible seasons but I just think he's too much of a liability now. Everyone is bricking it whenever he gets the ball at his feet, his distribution under pressure is awful and he just cannot play out from the back

His shot stopping is still second to none, but unfortunately that's just not enough these days

If Maguire isn't already rotting in the reserves, I'll be raging. He's awful

100% on De Gea that for me. He should have just put his foot through it. Maguire is shot of confidence and had a player 5 yards either side of him and another only a little further away.
I know you all dislike him and I get it but that first goal is on the keeper.

A goalkeeper’s mistakes are always magnified. It was a bad day at the office for the team and De Gea will be criticised but out of the players that need to go he will be low down on the list for me.

Maguire called for it. Martinez would have turned and played it forward. The problem with Maguire is his mind works in minutes not split seconds. He is absolutely finished as a player and would have been put to pastures new at least a couple of seasons ago if he didn't cost 80 million.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing but Chris Smalling is a much better player than Maguire could ever have been. I understand the league is weaker but he has been fantastic at Roma. He has 3 goals this season too with 4 in the last.

De Gea never has these problems when Martinez and Varane/Lindelof is in front of him.

I think DDG is at the end but this summer getting rid of Maguire, Martial and possibly Sancho would be priorities for me.

Nah it’s on Maguire that. Other defenders deal with that situation, he’s called for the ball. He should know what is going on around him.

Looked at it many times now, obviously it will divide opinion for days but for me I'd says that is on Maguire.

The ball into him isn't even lacking pace.hr can turn, feign and even roll the ball out, but he hesitated, stops and stubs the ball right at the player. He checks his surroundings and asks for the ball. He just hesitates and panicked.

Yeah it’s definitely on Maguire TBF, it doesn’t help that Maguire has the touch of a catholic priest though

Maguire should open his body and pass it forward.
Instead he's stopped the ball in facing his own goal when he knows he's surrounded

This is professional level football
How often do you see any CB accepting the ball under pressure from 2 opposition players, on the edge of their own area, just spin away and play the ball forwards like that? And we're not just talking about any CB, we're talking about the biggest, slowest and clumbsiest CB going in Maguire.

He absolutely could have done better and shares the blame for the goal but he was put into a situation that he should have never been in by De Gea. Whether Maguire asks for the ball or not, it was a ridiculous pass to make. Even if Maguire was capable of doing what you suggested, what was the best case scenario? A punt upfield? Would have been easier and safer for De Gea to do that to begin with. And I'm sure somebody is going to say he could have played a pass into midfield but playing a near blind pass into midfield while being closed down by 2 opposition players is full of risk and could have easily ended up being intercepted by a Sevilla player and they're breaking forwards again. And the same person who said Maguire should have done that now, will be blaming Maguire for doing that in that situation too.

I didn't get to see it sadly so can't comment but Scholes is blaming De Gea according to twitter quotes.

For people who did get to watch it is it true that HM injured Martial? The Daily Hate is reporting it but as with anything they report I feel the need for independent corroboration:

edit: just found the scholes twitter comment which includes the footage:

Yeah that is a double ****-up from both of them. Why didn't De Gea play it to the right though?

and here is the injury "footage". I can't really tell who does what tbh.

He should’ve, but what do you do when your supposed captain demands the ball and you’re trying to build team work with the people directly in front? Those two probably hate each other, so for DDG it was probably lose/lose, alternative would have been Maguire whinging at him all night or whatever

That footage of Maguire/Sabitzer/Martial is amazing. Beggars belief, reminds me of when Maguire kicked Pogba in the face!

I’m not on De Gea’s back at all and I’d personally want him to stay but he has to take responsibility for that, it doesn’t matter who’s calling for it, the better option would’ve been to punt it, ‘if in doubt boot it out’. Maguire although I’m not as critical as most on here just isn’t right for us, question marks are instantly raised when he’s in the team which aren’t when we have varane and martinez.

As I’ve said many times, we’ve made great improvements this season, but such was the depths we descended too we’ve still got more to go before we are truly title contenders. I have confidence we’ll get there but it’ll take a bit longer, just like it did for Klopp at Liverpool.

I just hope the sale process, whether the Glazers sell or not, is resolved before the summer, as we drastically need some strong additions to bolster that squad. If Glazers are still looking for buyers or it's all still up in the air, then they're not going to put money in to players

Captain hindsight: you see that Maguire calling for it has drawn 3 players so you play it to wan bissaka and bypass 3 players who are out of position.

The only thing Maguire could have done have been played that ball is to not touch it and spin. How many CBs have you seen do that. Bailly is. mad enough to do it. Rio Ferdinand had the ball skills for it. But I don't even think Martinez would have. I know people say the pass from Maguire to Wan Bissaka was easy and Maguire made a hash of it but I don't agree

Martinez has been played the ball like that previously by De Gea, he turned, beat the first man and layed it off to the full back. Pretty sure it was against Betis.

I stand corrected I have seen Martinez be played a bad ball by De Gea with 1 player on him, never 2-3
