UEFA Champions League 6/7 December *** Spoilers ***

Really missed Carrick tonight, he's been the only player to gain any credit in the last few matches.

Giggs, the bloke is an absolute legend, but like Neville and Scholes last season needs to realise his legs are finally gone and call it quits. We needed pace and aggression in CM to catch Basle and counter-attack but we let them have far too much time on the ball.

Young was disappointing but he's capable of doing something special which can't be said for Park who I can categorically say contributed nothing tonight.

Don't know why Fletcher didn't come on for Vidic and shift Jones back to CB and actually give us one proper midfielder on the pitch?!

+1

Nani was disappointing for the first 15 minutes or so (wasted a few good chances) but after that really livenened up and was amongst the best on the pitch

Still think Smalling being down in the penalty area from a head injury (even if it was caused while coming together with a team mate) should have caused a stop in play

Fletcher is still coming back from his stomach illness, so not sure he would have made much of a difference but might have stopped 2nd goal possibly

Ref was giving lots of soft free kicks to Basle imo , yet rarely punished them for fouls (or the blatant barge at Rooney in the 1st half)

edit - in regards to Rooney - remember Fergie has played him in midfield a number of times this season which wont have helped his game, and he plays better with a partner upfront with him rather than just two wide players way either side (so its tactics rather than just his effort that is making him look poorer)

evans definatley, but giggs still has a small part to play.

at 38 it is a very small part. evra is no spring chicken either, giggs can't cover as much of the field as he needs to both attackingly and defensively. you need modric and i'd even go as far to say that maybe sandro should be under your radar, he'd not let your CM go to pieces and will chase down like park would've done not so long ago. of course, i hope you don't go for them but you are missing some serious grit and flair centrally.

i thought jones was a defender? was he in cm because of an absence of carrick and fletcher?

Man United need some world class players to become a world class team again.

I can't think of any i would say are world class. Rooney? Not recently. Vidic? maybe.

:/

glad i am not the only one who has noticed this.
ever since that contract row, he just does not do the job as good for us or England.
He still has the odd bit of brilliance, but he not consistent anymore, imo

I'l be honest I was pretty worried at the beginning of the season, he looked super sharp and really determined to make an impact. Seems to have trailed right off though.

There are far too many doyles on this forum. I'm sad that 4 English teams won't be representing in the knockout stages. It always makes for a far more interesting tournament.

Ohh and Rooney needs to sort his attitude out. If he's not going to give 100% then he needs to be replaced. He's been absolutely useless for a while now.

not just that, there are only a few people that pass and move, every single match, theres no movement, its horrid, rooney will pass, and stand still? its shocking, he does not work, we go forward so slow nowadays.

What an odd night, shocked about United, didn't see the game but I had no doubt they'd find a way through, can't get my head around Manchester United in the Europa League, City vs United in the final though probably! Should be a good game

We have so many players who are only getting worse, Giggs made one brilliant pass tonight, but then he played about 20 really **** ones. He doesn't move as much any more and when they attacked he was often just walking back. I don't want him to hang around too long like Neville, it's horrible watching one of your favourite players not be able to do what he did.

We are definitely through, Fulham can still qualify, Birmingham need a miracle and Spuds are out.

Cheers, just looked it up. :) Didn't even realise there was another round of games left!

Spurs can still go through apparently, but they need five whilst Kazan lose.

To be fair, United have spent 20 years laughing at us all, it's their turn for once I'm sure they can suck it up

Didn't deserve to go through, nowhere near good enough over the six games.

Good luck to the other English teams through.

Better if they draw each other in one of the two-leg ties. That'll distract them whilst we take first place in the league.
