UEFA Champions League/Europa League 6/7/8 March *** Spoilers ***

Kinda feel sorry for Ronaldo and other players who are playing well at the moment...but regardless for the past 2-3 seasons, no one has come even remotely close to what Messi has done yr in yr out.

To split hairs Ronaldo has matched Messi goal scoring wise in those 2 or 3 years. That's not to say Messi isn't the better of the two but Ronaldo is just as effective and his goal return proves that.

At the end of the day there's not a lot in it between the two and yet Messi is clearly the better if that makes sense :p

Never understood why people think you need a world cup to be considered one of the greatest.

Ask the players ;)

World Cup - Biggest Cup you can win as a player, they're rare too.

I think in terms of quality, there isn't *too* much between the Champions League and a World Cup.

However, the World Cup remains a very elite club to be a part of and it takes some seriously good football to get there.

There is a reason the team of '66 is still spoken about with such joy.

Because its so darned rare England actually win anything :D

But beyond that.......

(and there were no horrendous stories about them either - admittedy the press was a completely different being during the 60's also)

I know he has but what i meant to say was that regarding being the best player on the planet, Ronaldo has no chance unless Messi gets injured and is out for a good season or 2 or he decides to call it a day ie retire...which wont happen for a long time yet.

I do wonder how Messi would do in the EPL or say the italian league...would he be just as masterful as he is now or would he fade into an average player....

I think he would slaughter everyone single handedly in Italy, would love to see him in the EPL (where he would still be fantastic) not that it will ever happen

even if City bid £150m for him :D

I would almost guarantee he wouldn't be scoring over 40 goals in our league like he and Ronaldo do in Spain. There's no chance of him not being anything other than a huge success over here though. Wont ever happen of course, he's going to be Barcelona for life and if he does ever move my money would be back to Argentina

The real **** take is he's still only 24 so he's probably got at least 3 years still at the very top

Best player ever tbh

I bet there are a number of La Liga teams even Arsenal wouldnt concede against (which must show how terrible a number of the teams are):D

I would think both players would get 35ish league goals + a season if they were to come over here (/again)

The world cup used to have meaning but it has been surpassed by the CL which is obviously the pinnacle of football achievement, has been for 10 years. CL football >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> international football

Messi would tear teams apart in the Premier League.

You can see his ability with the ball, you can't tackle him and if you try, 99% of the time you'll give away a free-kick/penalty.

Messi really would. Unfortunatley I believe he'd never leave Barcelona and I'd class him as priceless so I don't think we'll ever find out.

The only hope we have of seeing him in England is if he gets bored in Spain and wants a new challenge and wants to stamp his best in the world status on the game. If that happens then I expect Barca to not accept anything lower than £150 million.

So you think if he wasn't sold he wouldn't of repeated what he'd done prior to leaving?

Exactly. Ronaldo only once scored more than 30 goals for us in a season and it was that season when he hit 42. Obviously you could argue he's older now but I still find it unlikely.

Just look down the record books how many players have scored over 40 goals in a season for a PL side? Henry came close but stopped at 39, Shearer made 37 twice for Blackburn (and that's really going back some years) so as best I can see only 2 players have ever done it; Van Nistelrooy in 02/03 with 44 and Ronaldo in 07/08 with 42.

The PL is tougher than La Liga there's no two ways about that, if fact is blindingly bloody obvious that the PL is stronger.

The EPL is probably borderline stronger than La Liga, look at the standard of both divisions, they're very poor, you just need to look how we've faired in Europe to see the collapse in the standard. People say the defending is woeful in the La Liga but then just look at Wolves, Bolton, Wigan etc etc, Messi would absolutely eat them for Breakfast.

Ronaldo probably wouldn't of hit the 40 goal mark again purely as the players around him wouldn't of been good enough. Bring Madrid to the EPL and he'd hit 40 again.

I'd like to see Man City offer £1b just to test their (Barcelona) resolve when it comes to 'priceless'.

I doubt it would take that much to test their resolve. Ronaldo sold for 80m, I reckon offer 200m for Messi and Barca would be willing to sell.
