UEFA Euro 2012 - Quarter-finals - ** spoilers **

Typical England game. Play reasonable first half, then in second half barely able to string a pass together.

I *hope* in the coming year, we have a good clear out in the squad. Definitely now time to take off the old and try the new, and get them experienced for World Cup 2014. Same problems as World Cup 2010, and that is because we still have some of that team left over and a formation that doesn't really work. A different formation would be nice. For the speed in which we play, 4-4-2 and 4-4-1-1 doesn't really suit us. We should play 4-3-2-1 but we need to build a new team first and get them experienced like Germany and used to playing together.

I can see we didn't have a lot of choices coming into the competition and to be fair we did OK with what we had (considering it was expected that we would never get out of the groups) but now it's time to start from scratch and build a new squad. First and foremost, build a new midfield with new young players. The lack of midfield really showed again tonight, and as good as Gerard is he is trying to be like 3 players at once which is near impossible and overly demanding. I don't think it matters that we don't have anyone young and amazing to instantly replace player like Gerard, we just need fresher legs who can keep the momentum going in the midfield. And less hoofing it up to the front expecting someone to get it each time.

Anyway, that's enough from me. I think we all know the problems with the England team.

tbh the money some of these players get probably doesn't help. They have everything they want, so what incentive is there to win for your country?

Indeed. He wasn't match fit and never got into his stride.

Anyone who has seem him on form for Man Utd knows what sort of a force he can be, he wasn't even half of that in this tournament. :(

Also, Rooney, as most strikers would, looks useless in games where United have less than 50% possession. This is an occasional issue for United, but business as usual for England.

Wanted to throttle Lawrenson. Sooo glass half empty.

Best thing about this evening was this Linkin Park cover turning up on the end of the BBC's coverage. I didn't recognise it at all and they really made it their own:

I think Hodgson has done well, considering the lack of options we have in midfield we have ground out some good results. The players just aren't good enough.

I think you could have reached the quarter finals if you were the manager.

How much to the players win......?

England need to sort out their squad. it will take awhile for the manager to find the right players to gel together. look how long Germany, Spain, Portugal hell even the poles are getting better.

Its only going to take more heart ache and disappointment from England to get things right.

Theo Walcott - "To be fair they didn't create that much"

What?!? You were actually playing in the match you muppet!

Wouldn't you just slot it in the other side if that was the case?

Would be pretty reckless not to.

I reckon he did it to swing confidence towards Italy. He deserves even more credit for that penalty.

Would recklessness really inspire confidence? Let's put it this way if he made the choice to just dink it down the middle without seeing or believing that the goalkeeper committed himself then he's either brave or stupid and I'm not sure where the line is drawn on that one - if he's successful it's courage and if not he's a numpty?

I'd personally go for as far away from the goalkeeper as possible but then I'm not a World class player with confidence in my ability.

I want to see England switch to a 4-2-3-1 So many of the big teams use it and we have the players for it. As much as i love the Gerrard, Lampard era we have to start using the youngsters.
Hart
Richards/Walker~ Cahill ~ Lescott ~ Cole/Baines
~ Rodwell ~ Wilshire
Walcott/Sturridge ~ Rooney ~ Ox, Young
~ Welbeck/Caroll
Most of those are top class players at the moment and there are a few I imagine could become some of the worlds best, we've all seen how good Wilshire gets on fifa :D
