UEFA Euro 2012 - Quarter-finals - ** spoilers **

Well from what I watched he certainly won more of the hoofballs than Rooney or Welbeck did.

You are the right one to talk about stats also DM you are always banging on about stats......

No that is 1 interception.

He won 100% of the aerial duels, basically every ball Hart kicked to him he won, Just no one was even close to him so he could pass it on.

I find no fact in your opinion sorry.

subjective stats, he didnt win every aerial ball, thats bull. he was ****e and no stat is going to change that.

Well done, you're right, one stat is identical to another, goals scored is absolutely as useful a stat as the number of times a player spits, picks his nose or farts. You can make a stat of ANYTHING, subjective stats are just that, they can't be quantified largely because 2 people will get a different number for every random type of occurrence you pull out your behind and decide to jot up.

100% of aerial duels I am stating as a FACT as a completely incorrect stat, not to mention that, winning aerial duels isn't useful in and of itself. Winning a header, which goes to your own team, and in a position that leads to an attack, great, winning a header that goes straight out, or straight to the keeper, useless. Stats PLUS some actual observations from the game, I never use just stats(almost never), quantifying stats, what they mean, what happened in the game is useful. Trotting out "player A won loads more headers than player B" without anything else, is useless. Player A might be on against Ivanovic and Terry, while player B might come on after they've been subbed due to injury for Essien and Mikel... player B winning more headers doesn't mean he's a better header, nor did anything useful with them.

Anyone who watched the game would know Carroll lost two headers with Pirlo and a couple with others, and KNOWS for a fact that stat is incorrect. They would also know none of the headers(or from what I recall) led to goal scoring chances. I can only really remember 2 that went to team mates, one of them was Rooney, Rooney gave it away almost instantly.

The right team went through in the end - 1st half was about equal and England held their own pretty well, even if they didnt make the most of the slim chances they had. from half time onwards though Italy were far better and could have scored 3 or 4 and it wouldnt have been harsh score-line

Saying that they made the most of every tackle, and England didnt even press the crucial players until they got near the penalty box.

Young's penalty imo was well placed just a pity it was a little too firm, Cole's was just a bad penalty (way too soft) although after coming right after Young's I guess thats understandable - I didnt expect Hart to save any

Overall it was roughly what was expected, no-one imo played amazingly over the tournement , a lot played pretty woefully (Young especially) but hopefully for the world cup Wilshire will be fit and healthy and Cleverley will hopefully be worthy of a squad place at least with a few more options all round.

Welbeck did ok for his first tourny, did a lot of defensive work well last night, Lescott did well, Johnson did brilliantly in defence although he is frustrating in attack running with the ball with his head down a lot (into dead ends), Hart did well (although the "unlucky" shots by the Italians helped his stats greatly lol) Rooney looked 5-10% off the pace imo, not helped by having a month out before his first game. Its the core of a decent core of a side for World Cup group phase (given that England actually qualify lol)

Then presumably you must think England are very good? Because from what I saw, both teams played about the same standard, and neither did well enough to score a goal.

edit: Granted, Italy had better possession than England and a few more chances at goal, but still made tons of mistakes, just like England.

"Italy are average....next to what exactly?" Next to the likes of Portugal, Spain and Germany.

We're above average obviously. ABOUT THE SAME STANDARD?!? Are you serious?

Italy had 63% possession, had 31 shots compared to our 8. Just because they had an off night in front of goal it doesn't mean we're near them.

And if Italy are average compared to Portugal, Spain and Germany (and tbh I'd say they were level with Portugal) Then they are not average are they? Do you know the meaning of the word?

How many games at the end of the season did rooney miss? I don't know and I'm curious as to why people are banging on about him not being match fit.

What a complete waste of time it was at the FA fighting his ban and getting the future king involved :D Just how many tournaments now has he gone and delivered absolutely nothing of note. Yet we cannot take someone and play someone in form just in case he produces a 'moment of magic'.

He doesn't even scare teams with his pace anymore, his passing and ability to pick people out seems to have evaporated.

It's definitely time to use him from the bench and find another forward partnership.

The WC team in 2014 will be interesting, as Gerrard, Lampard, Terry, Ferdinand, Cole, Parker etc will all be too old, I think?

Will have to be like a completely new team. Perhaps it's for the best.

He didn't miss any games at the end of the season, I can only assume those who are saying he wasn't match fit mean in relation to those around him (having played 2 more games in this tournament). It's a rubbish excuse tbh.

That said who exactly was more inform than Rooney at the end of the season that was more deserving of selection?

I still don't think Rooney played that bad. Considering in all but one match we were giving the other team the majority of possession and resorting to hit and hope tactics I thought he did ok with the ball. Especially against Italy we had less than 40% possession! If Welbeck had finished that move where he did the backheel we'd be raving about that sequence, it's not his fault Welbeck stuck it over.

more interesting will be the fact its in brazil, we looked knackered playing in europe chasing the ball, its only going to be worse over there :(, unless we get really lucky with the weather.

im still waiting for the joke of a poster who said carroll played well to reply.

wasn't me, but i think he did ok when he came on, first touch was pretty decent, did more chasing/harrowing of the backline than rooney/welbeck.

It was me.

He has a thing for Carroll saying he did nothing at all. When infact he did a fair bit. He must be jealous of Carrolls lovely hair that or Carroll raped him when he was younger.
