UEFA Euro 2016 - Group Stage TV Guide/Schedule/Info/ - Tournament Chat

Wilshere over Drinkwater is just crazy, Wilshere might have done well in qualifying but you can't go from having a whole season out to playing at international level...

I find it horrible that Antonio wasn't included in the squad, from what I've seen of him this season he's been great and would be just the type of player we need.

I'm happy Milner is there though, he has done a great job at Liverpool this season despite where they have finished in the league. Good at crosses yes, good at corners? Hell no.

Why is it crazy? Drinkwater was only ever going to be cover. Wilshere's a gamble but if it works then you've got a player that could make the difference in a key game, if it doesn't work then Dier comes in and you're in the same situation had you taken Drinkwater as he'd only been cover for Dier.

Drinkwater must be wondering what he needs to do to get into the squad. I don't think we need both him and Henderson, and for me Drinkwater deserves to go based on what has happened / his performances this year

Concerned at lack of centre backs, but then who do you take?

I'd have taken Townsend over Barkley, he's never shown it at international level for me

I didn't think Spain, France or Germany were in our group?

They're not, who said they were?

If it wasn't already obvious, the point was that when we get to the latter stages of the competition and are playing against the best sides, we're not going to beat them with Drinkwater or Townsend. If we're to have a chance then we're going to need our best technical players at their best. I'd rather gamble on Wilshere and Sterling and have a chance, no matter how small, than settle for mediocrity with Drinkwater and Townsend.

hah, we'll get ripped apart in the group stages, our defense is shocking, and now our midfield is made out of glass and also shocking. Brilliant management by Woy.

I can't see a plan B at all. We should have taken Townsend as he's while he's a bit average he's always a threat off the bench. Wilshere being included is just nuts. We should have taken Antonio and I'd pick Albrighton over Sturridge, just to give another option.

We're going to be so narrow whichever system we pick, that any opposition we face could deal with us, and the better teams will just laugh as our full-backs plow forward. We ought to have included some midfield width just so we can switch to something even remotely different.

I assume the reason for 5 forwards is that Rooney can play in midfield if needed? That's the only flexibility we have.

You say you don't want to settle for mediocrity, but you'd rather have Sterling? He's been nothing beyond mediocre for the whole season, normally below. Drinkwater has actually had good games, which is far more than Sterling.

But yes, Antonio and possibly Noble should have been in the provisional squad. I'd have Antonio in my starting 11 for sure.

Don't be silly, we have Vardy and Rashford who can play on the wings

Drinkwater, Townsend, Antonio and Noble have all had good games, more than Sterling and Wilshere have had this season, I agree. But Drinkwater, Townsend, Antonio and Noble could all play to their absolute best and it still wouldn't be enough because they're just not good enough.

If and given their form and fitness, it's a big if, Sterling and Wilshere can play to their best then we have 2 excellent players (far better than the 4 others) that could (yes it'll still be a big ask) make the difference when it counts.
wilshere a defensive mid?

da ****
In the eyes of Hodgson he is:

I'd rather gamble on Sterling and Wilshere and have the smallest chance of winning than know we've got no chance with Drinkwater, Townsend, Antonio and Noble.

You do realise DD got MOTM on his full England debut don't you? And he's had an absolutely superb season with Leicester being utterly integral to us winning the league? As well as assisting, creating play, scoring he does a heck of a lot of work off the ball which goes largely unnoticed, he's a very unselfish player. Put it this way, if he was playing for Utd and they'd won the league last season he'd 100 percent be in the final England squad. Just because he's not in one of the "big club" teams means he's been shunned. Disgrace.

Its only Leicester so it doesnt count :D

Take one "recovering" cm by all means, but taking two is just asking for trouble. Full match fitness counts a lot more for me than any previous (international) experience with a full season out injured

Wilshire may be able to make the difference IF he was fully upto speed / fit etc, but he is WAY short of that and therefore making any difference in a knock out game vs France/Spain/Germany is completely laughable - even if actually getting to the knock out stages to meet one of those teams in the first place isnt laughable enough in the 1st place :D

I do realise, I'm pretty sure I commented on it and his performance in general. It was something along the lines of "while he's not played badly, he's shown he's not up to playing at this level". You might be right and had he played for Utd he would have been in the squad - it would have been the wrong decision though.

I'd agree with this. I see the Germans have brought in Schweinsteiger in place of Marco Reus who has been injured in recent weeks (and throughout the season) but for England to include Wiltshire and Sturridge seems a little crazy. Not match fit / permacrock and the intensity of the Euro's for games in close proximity could see a couple of players out before the tournament starts.

It's a shame for France that Benzema isn't in the squad. Giroud and Gignac are not quite as good, shall we say. Hopefully Griezmann will start up front instead.

Wilshire, what the **** has that soppy **** done to warrant a place? Not only is he constantly injured, hence the old Tampax joke, but he spends half the match sat on his arse or lying down crying because a big boy brushed past him.
