So lock threads just because you have no self control? Continue this into premiership day threads and FA cup final too? Or the boxing thread?

Utter nonsense closing a thread because the MODs don't want to moderate it while the games on. Find a mod that hates football :p
Doesn't auto-script mod filter swearing automatically? What else is so urgent it can't wait 90 minutes or 120mins to be mod reviewed?

What a load of rubbish, there is no "On the other hand". Southgate has been brilliant in the Euro's, those so called turgid setups? have beaten a decent Germany side that swept the defending champions away, which included Ronaldo, Jota and Fernandes, and finished off the Danes.

We're in our first Euro final ever, conceded one goal so far, still that isn't good enough, gimme a break!
Results aren't the whole story.

Greece won it in 2004 ergo Greece had one of the best managers, ever?

It just doesn't work like that.

England in the group stages were dire to watch. Really awful.

The crux of the question is: should Southgate be able to do better with the player he has at his disposal? And the answer for many of us is "yes".

Anyway I have a feeling he's going to be found out big-style against Italy. His confusing aversion to making timely substitutions will probably be on display once again, as we start with an extremely defensive and negative setup and it fails to work out. Then in the 85th minute he'll bring on Grealish before taking him off in the 87th. Tactical masterclass, I'm expecting :p

He only has 1 brother who actually follows football. I don’t for example. I’d definitely leave my wife at home :D
Even if she (really) wanted to go?

In that situation taking anyone but the wife is asking for trouble, no? I'd fully expect any of my brothers to take their wives instead of me, and if I knew the wife wanted to go I'd politely decline anyhow.

That was the pattern against Croatia last WC. Vardy watching while the lethargic and ineffective Kane lumbered around midfield. Southgate kept him on the whole match.
Here's the team list and sub timings below from that match: 1 sub in the first 90 minutes. 1. When they've equalised at what, 68 minutes?
He swaps Sterling, who looked like he was actually intimidating their defenders, for Rashford at 74, who was easier for them to handle, when it was clear Kane wasn't firing on all fours. In fact he might as well have been on all fours for the contribution he was making in the 2nd half.
Vardy didn't get on until ET, when they had gone ahead and were closing ranks, and with next to no time to do anything anyway.
Yeah, great tactics, don't use the player who is best against a high line until they park-the-bus and go 6-3-1?
If felt like Southgate was playing for penalties in ET until they scored their second. e.g. He brought on Eric Dier for Henderson at 97 minutes. the other changes were to preserve the formation, Rose for young etc. There's no change in system when it goes 1-1, nothing to show an intent beyond "I've got my plan and I'm sticking to it" which is fine, so long as that plan works. If they figure it out and you don't adapt, then in the words of the great the prophet Hudson "that's game over man, game over."

England team (V Croatia 2018)

  • 1Pickford
  • 2Walker Booked at 54mins, Substituted for Vardy at 112'minutes
  • 5Stones
  • 6Maguire
  • 8Henderson Substituted for Dier at 97'minutes
  • 12Trippier scored at 5 minutes
  • 7Lingard
  • 20Alli
  • 18Young Substituted for Rose at 90'minutes
  • 9Kane
  • 10Sterling Substituted for Rashford at 74'
Next we have Scotland England 2021. He uses two subs. Two out of five. Content with a draw clearly!
  • 1Pickford
  • 24James
  • 5Stones
  • 15Mings
  • 3Shaw
  • 14Phillips
  • 4Rice
  • 19Mount
  • 20Foden Substituted for Grealish at 63'minutes
  • 9Kane Substituted for Rashford at 74'minutes
  • 10Sterling
At least he subbed Kane this time, but Foden looked the most lively and was asking questions of them. Grealish needed to come on, but Foden wasn't the player to take off to achieve that IMO!

I'd take my wife that's for sure.

The parallels between Southgate and Solskjaer are remarkable. Tactics, subs and use of squad are all very poor. Not a single trophy despite years in charge.

And yet somehow the players are happy to play for them. Will give them credit for that. Hope England win but I also have my doubts.

Looking back at this in all honesty we have had the best team on paper by far.

Our bench if you include Henderson who left because he knew wasn't going to play still ranks as one of the best in Europe and could have easily got to the same place as we are now.

Henderson

James, Coady, Mings, Chillwell.

Henderson, Grealish, Foden

Sancho, DCL, Rashford.

I haven't seen depth like that. Italians, Spain and France cannot get anywhere close to that and Belgium have a first 11 and that is it. If we lose tomorrow it will be a terrible failure.

We haven't lost yet though - maybe save your criticisms until we do?

Our squad depth right now is the best I’ve seen in my lifetime, we can swap players out with little to no drop of quality. Centre halves and striker being the exception to that. Pickford is my only concern, he’s been decent this tournament but was abysmal against Denmark. 2/3 big mistakes that if happen again we will get punished.

That second string XI above doesn’t even include Bellingham who is going to be ridiculously good imo.

World Cup in 18 months we could have a real shot.

let's try and win a euro first hey?

I am not saying we haven't done well but when looking at it I haven't seen a country with a strength in depth we have. Look at Italy for example. They have a fantastic CB partnership yes but they are both in their twilight. Our CB's are a combined 130 million. Lol. They also lost their left back and needed to replace with a Brazilian who has had hardly any minutes for Chelsea. We have had a champions League winner on the bench struggling to get in the team!

If we do win the Euro's we must be close to favourites to win the world cup from a on paper football manager view of looking at things.

The difference between Italy and ourselves is that they have Mancini.

Love this photo. Young Bukayo has obviously never had to learn how to do a tie, so Hendo’s stepped in and dressing him like a dad dresses his little boy
