Apart from beating Germany 2-0 was there any other decent result on the way?

I mean going to extra time against Denmark surely should have prepared you for this? It's a nation of just 5 million people.

After Belgium's first game with their squad I knew they weren't going to win it so I was going with France but they were hopeless as well throwing away a 3-1 lead. The tactics were completely wrong with Belgium and he stuck with them because his world class players managed to pull them off. But there is only so much de bruyne and co could do and it was the Italians who finally showed them the door.

Italy weren't magnificent but they were set up right and had a decent squad and plenty of talent to make it work.

England quite frankly were lucky to get this far. World cup will prove this.

Ukraine 0- England 4? That was ok surely? The manner of that match - pressing to the end. I thought maybe Southgate had realised how to do it. But then Denmark showed he hadn't lost the old ways, and tonight confirmed it again.

Re the WC - if we still have Southgate I wouldn;t be surprised if it's another Roy failure to get out the group, or else a 2010 wet rag early in the knockouts

You off Italian stock too?

What a team 82 was!

I was 11 yrs old, amazing night, met up with family in George square and it was mental.

Hopefully we'll see them lift the WC next year too!

Oh crap I meant 3 years late. My father is from Torino, think I'm a quarter English or less, it gets complicated on my mother's side.
Delighted for my dad, he put £100 on Italy to win in a betting shop because he doesn't know how to do online. He reckons it's the second bet he ever did.
First one was Italy to win the 82 WC but he did it a few games in so 'only' won like 3k but guess that was a good wedge then.
No expectations for WC, I thinks that's best to avoid disappointment!

I'm not surprised at your dreams of winning if you think besting Ukraine is a major highlight reel. What have they ever done at the world stage apart from beat a France side on penalties that beat itself in 90 minutes.

We did our best, it didn’t go as we’d of hoped. Is what it is.

Your 'best'! Losers always whine about their best. Winners go home and have snus snus with the prom queen - Sean Conery, and he was right. Clearly Englands best was dismal, which is no surpise considering the crap teams they defended their way past to the final.

Italy's only whipping boy game was turkey, they had to play quality sides all the way there, and it showed when they went 1-0 down. Southgate thinks the team did great but by comparison they played subpar / mediocre teams at best. Kane should have been walking away with the golden boot considering the team they played.

Messi just picked up his first ever big international trophy at the Copa America after years of being in Argentinian teams packed full of world-class talent but low on knowing how to win a bunch of games in a row at a tournament as a team. France and Belgium’s squads didn’t translate into good team performances, smaller sides troubled bigger sides because they weren’t afraid to have a go at them. Nobody at international level just walks to a final these days and wins it.

England almost did a Greece 2004 tonight but failed to emulate them by fluffing the shoot-out, it worked until it didn’t work. All you can hope is either Southgate learns from this or someone else can take this mostly young team and make better use of it.

did you read my posts? where were or are my "dreams of winning?"

Southgate must also know that when you bring players on to take penalties the pressure on them is massively ramped up.

If he doesn't know that, he's a complete moron.

If you're brought on to take a pen then you *must* score.

It's one of the stupidest ways to use a substitute imaginable. I guess that's why you didn't see any other team using that particular tactical masterstroke.

Netherlands brought on a new keeper before the end of extra time purely for the pens and it worked. So it's not a stupid way to use subs, it only didn't work because 2 of the subs took the pens like retards. They need to go back to the days of Ronald Koeman and just stick their laces through it, rather than prancing around like a batty boy on strictly come dancing as they run up.

makes no difference young or old. there's no good time to miss a pen, but they're young enough to do a Stuart Pearce and smash one in next time the pens come round.

Those 3 missed england penalities were absolutely pathetic  I hope the players fully get all the stick they deserve from fluffing them! Only 1 FFS had to score then england would have been 3-1 up putting ALL the pressure on Italy! Horrible waste of the advantage Italy must have though it was xmas as they were handed that on a platter.

I don't think the players did badly, they weren't used to their best potential by Southgate who I suspect is too blinded by ideology, or maybe hands tied by other factors, to ever learn from what went right and what went wrong.

Guys just ignore Psycho Sonny. He always does this on the football forum, comes in and posts a load of nonsense, gets proven wrong on multiple things, offers no comeback and vanishes until his next 'revelation'

Kane had zero shots on target after 2-3 games. I had actually backed him for golden boot after I saw the groups. Which tells you how easy it was with a Scot backing him. That's a tenner I knew I'd never see again after the group was finished.

Italy Vs Spain was the real final.

I hope Southgate does the honourable thing and steps down as I think he's taken the team as far as he can and we need a new coach with new ideas and a bit more positivity.

Feel terrible for the three young lads who missed pens, but it baffles me how/why they were put in that position. Italy were the best team in the tournament though.

I find the penalties baffling - surely one of the first things an England manager would do is measure up the team for their penalty taking ability and as things are sliding that way make sure to utilise the best.

Does Southgate have a bet on them losing penalities or something?

Sterling often dismantles himself.

I know he's scored a few this time, but it's not unusual for Sterling to just run straight into a crowd and lose the ball. He does it regularly against all opposition.

this, and then falls down like he has been hit by the early morning milk train before yelling at the ref. He should just get on and play the game he gets paid millions for.

A decently talented bunch of players, hamstrung by a complete donkey of a manager. Still, a good tournament even so for England, and Italy deserved it anyway.

He'd have prob got higher odds a few games in because the stumbled out their group, the bang they came alive, the 3-2 Brazil game was immence as was the 3-1 final.

My dads from Lucca area, I wouldv'e been there right now celebrating as I'm always there this time of year, gutted I'm not, but I'm still watching Rai1 just now enjoying the moment.

Can you imagine the lifetime of pain if they won?
