It is what it is sadly. I'm proud of every single one of them, even Southgate. He had the courage of his convictions and if he was a little stubborn towards the end I can forgive him. We've played less cynical football with great players against poor opposition and still never gotten this far, he had no choice but to play it this way for as long as he did (almost...).

Really loved the whole competition to be honest. I felt out of love with Football a while ago for a number of reasons (prem loyalty not being what it was, rising ticket prices, prem in general being less about the game), but this comp has done so much to bolster what love I still have for the sport. Been some truly brilliant football played this past month with so much heart in it from almost all sides. Looking forward to getting stuck into a new season more then I have in a long, long time.

Not to bothered, thought making the final was a decent achievement and no complaints about Italy winning as I thought they were the best side in the tournament
Plenty of teams would have loved to be able to swap places with england last night to be finalists

Absolutely this. I will remember what it felt like to know England made it to a final. Maybe that's not enough for some people but it is for me.

I honestly cannot imagine that people are dissecting penalties that much. It should have never got to that stage! Two years ago Rashford scored a much higher stress one against PSG in a champions league knockout game to take United through. Penalties will always be a game of chance and we lost it simple as.

What the metric for 'a much higher stress one?' While people still call penalties a game of chance we'll keep on losing. Sure luck plays a part as with any sport, but there is so much more to penalties than just luck. Southgate has started to change that thought process, as with any behavioural change its a long process.

On a separate note Declan Rice and Kalvin Philips have been superb. Really impressed with them should be renewing their contracts as some clubs will be sniffing about.

35 games unbeaten now for italy with world cup only next year wouldn't bet against them

bonucci and chiellieni are the best cb pair in the world i imagine they will have at least another year

Same old sweaty socks gloating because we lost yawn, at the end of the day it's only a game of football :)

Try telling this to your own support......

Storming Wembley, fighting throughout the day with yourselves, racist abuse to you own players, a blanket coverage of England despite other home nations taking part.

And the English say it's embarrassing that Scotland celebrated a draw with the English......

England's new song for the world cup can be revealed here...

Semis and then a final

Definately heading in the right direction under southgate no matter how frustrating some of his decisions are
Agree. Yesterday he was 'a great manager look how far he's taken us, I can't believe were in the finals' today hes 'pure trash, awful manager sack him immediately'

Some people are so fickle. Italy were simply the better team as clearly shown by the completely uneven possession. If we had won those penalties I dont think anybody bar English supporters would have considered it a worthy win.

Pipe down, nobody cares about the lower league teams :p

Subbing on Sancho and Rashford was a terrible decision. Barely any time on the pitch for the whole tournament and then suddenly asking them to take the kick of their lives.

Italy thoroughly deserved the win though. If England had won the shootout it would have been pure robbery.

I don't get why he didn't use the setup used against Germany against both Denmark and Italy. It proved effective and was a good setup against the kind of approach Italy were using with plenty of options for changing up the mid-field if it proved necessary.

EDIT: I kind of get the concept of trying to draw them out with the style Italy were using but we simply don't have the players for that in Kane or Sterling even though Trippier and Shaw would be up to the task and proved as much on the night.

we did play same setup in final as against germany  we played a back 3

Nah had Trippier and Saka on from the start together and a more conventional approach overall.

Against Italy was wider mid-field and trying to draw them out but without players who could pull that off in terms of runs in behind and stuff like that.

Yep think a generation of quality is going to be lost to Southgates **** management and people aren’t going to realise until it’s too late. We won’t do anything at the World Cup. Quarter final and lose to a half decent side because we don’t have the guts to play to our strengths and have a go at teams.

Would rather lose by trying to win than lose by trying not to lose.

I think he did well in terms of drilling the squad, instilling disciplines, etc. the organisational side was good where things fell apart was not learning when things did and didn't work instead sticking to and/or reverting to ideologies - when his hand was forced away from them we did well.

Though maybe his hand was tied somewhat - at times it felt like *someone* was trying to write the story instead of letting the story write itself.

Southgate has got us the best result in 55 years. This is a great result and really looking forward to the World Cup now.

Agree with fez in respect to we aren't playing enough to our strengths or being disruptive enough.

Southgate has brought things on a long way but there are still massive issues to deal with.

Yeah he's one of those players that when he's having a good game he's outstanding, when he's not having a good game it's like he's not even there.
