UEFA Euro 2020 Round of 16 ** spoilers ** [26th - 29th June 2021]

Really wouldn't surprise me if Southgate decided to go with 3 at the back and have Trippier and Shaw down the wings, could be a handful

Also praying to the Gods at least one of Grealish or Saka starts

He will go three at the back. Realise it isn't working then change back to a back four at half time. There is a time and a place for a back 5 (Chelsea vs City champions league final) but if you have the personnel England does in midfield you do not need this.

You know, the more I see it, the less I think it was a Mbappe miss and the more I think it was a cracking save from Sommer.

Its a tough one, the overall penalty quality was very good last night, most of the penalties went right into the corners, Mbappes shot when you watch that video didnt go into the corner and was actually pretty close to the keeper in comparison.

There was nothing wrong with it really. Thats the nature of penalties. I have had this argument a number of times with people on here. Just because your penalty goes in doesn't mean it was objectively a good penalty. A good penalty gives the keeper the lowest chance of saving it. Hitting it down the middle is not a good penalty regardless of whether the keeper dives out of the way expecting (guessing) that it will go to the side.

So much of penalties is luck as to where the keeper goes vs where the ball goes. Your only job as a striker is to make the keepers chance of saving your penalty as small as possible. If he guesses the right way and goes at the right time, there are not that many penalties that will go in. The better the penalty the earlier and more decisive the keeper will have to be to have a chance of saving it.

Basically it was a cracking save and not a bad penalty. The penalty save from Lloris earlier in the match was also pretty good.

Pogba, just to pick one, certainly hit a better penalty but I don't think Mbappe's was bad at all. I don't think it was the worst penalty struck that night either. I don't know whether he was worse at sending the keeper the wrong way or whether it was just luck that sent Sommer in the right direction.

Basically @fez said what I am saying better :)

Southgate's interview yesterday was quite telling. He almost sounded in awe of the German squad and gave the impression he doesn't think we can win. Can't say I blame him, the guy's a natural born loser, but it can't help the squad.

I think it's hard to make the argument that a natural-born loser makes it as far as he did. Losers give up early on in life or once they fail something once or twice. I think it's more to do with he wants to win that much he'll have us playing some of the most pragmatic football we've seen from an England manager. He's also a nice guy™ and regularly gives compliments that aren't required.

Brutal yet accurate. Let's hope for the best :o

I've said it a few times but I think that penalty miss scarred him for life and he can't shake the feeling of letting a nation down and that's reflected in his managerial style. If we win the tournament it'll be interesting to see how many people died of boredom vs COVID for the duration of the Euros.

This. He's had more stick as manager then Capello or Hodgson ever had despite putting in better performances and seeming a great deal more passionate. I agree with a lot of the criticism on here and elsewhere directed at him, but a lot of it feels purely vindictive. I feel that that a lot about Football these days though, especially from English fans. We're so jaded and cynical.

Southgate gets stick because I can't recall a single game under him that's been good to watch. We're dire, dross and incredibly boring.

'Lesser' nations play far better stuff which is criminal when you look at the squad and that can only be down to the manager and coaching staff. He also has strange selections and substitutions, clearly has his favourites and will stick with them regardless of form.

Saka and Grealish were standouts last game and I hazard a guess to suggest neither will start tonight.

Edit: Having said that if we win it playing the worst football I can remember in 35 years of watching then hey, ill take it..... :p

Lol, just absolute horse ****….

I'm all for constructive criticism but some people get so caught up in the incessant negativity they start believing pure nonsense.

Under Southgate England have lost 10 games out of 57 and won 38. Natural born loser? Come on. He’s got some of the best stats an England manager has ever had.

He’s realistic and despite what some people thing, the England squad is far from the best in Europe. We can’t just play exciting football and beat anybody.

Germany has won a lot more tournaments than England and more than a few in recent years. Complimenting them seems apt unless you’re a moron. They’re a dangerous side.

bingo. Foden to come back in (despite not training with the squad), Southgate to stick with darling boy Kane (despite lacklustre performances) and England to lose their spark

You obviously don’t watch England play very often then. Their euro qualifiers were very exciting to watch. They were the highest scoring team in Europe. The people on here really make me laugh.

I watch every single game. Pumping a team by 2 or 3 who are absolute minnows doesn't make for an exciting watch, you make me laugh.

Takes 30 seconds to see we weren't the highest scoring qualifiers. You're talking ****.
