UEFA Euro 2020 Round of 16 ** spoilers ** [26th - 29th June 2021]

Pogba, just to pick one, certainly hit a better penalty but I don't think Mbappe's was bad at all. I don't think it was the worst penalty struck that night either. I don't know whether he was worse at sending the keeper the wrong way or whether it was just luck that sent Sommer in the right direction.

Basically @fez said what I am saying better :)

There was a clip of Xhaka and Sommer at the end and to me it seemed Xhaka was saying "I told you he'd go that way" and Sommer nodding and saying "good call" but that is just speculation on my part. The other thing I noticed is that Sommer flaps his left hand out quickly then pulls it back in without having moved, he then dives right as Mbappe goes that way (to Mbappe's left). It's possible Mbappe saw that hand flick and thought Sommer was going to the other side hence shot where he did.

I would agree it's not a horror pen but more an excellent save.

I literally don’t have a clue what you’re talking about.*

I'm going to be honest, you're pretty obnoxious in these football threads. Coming in after games have finished telling people they were wrong etc for just having an opinion.

You're definitely wrong on the most goals scored in euro qualifiers btw. Pro tip: Football is full of opinions and people enjoy discussing things without some failed fact-checker popping in to tell them they are wrong.

Edit: ^ Christ, if that post was a tackle it would be a straight red and a 10 game ban :D

Germany has won a lot more tournaments than England and more than a few in recent years. Complimenting them seems apt unless you’re a moron. They’re a dangerous side.
We're ranked higher than them and have multiple league and Champions League winners in the squad. The fact people focus on the negatives is because that's all the bloody manager focusses on. Even his players are more concerned about not conceding than playing their natural games thanks to his defeatist attitude.

I’m sick of people being negative for no reason. Like I said, I’m all for constructive criticism but people write teams off, not just England, for absolutely no reason at all

I’d also like to see where I said England were the highest goal scorers in the euro qualifiers? I said they were the highest goals scorers in Europe. Which for that period they were when taking into consideration the nations league and friendlies. My point about the qualifiers is they were far from boring to watch.

We have a very strong squad with some of the best players in the world, who regularly play at the very highest level.

We have a manager who has never really achieved anything as a manager, and watching England in any sort of competitive game is more often than not quite tragic.

Pointing these things out isn't being negative, it's just reality.

That being said I hope we do well later, I'd love to be wrong.

Ironically I think the fan negativity absolutely feeds into how we play football on the world stage. We don't play to win because most of the time the fans don't believe we can. We're rarely hopeful about moving forward, only bitterly analytical about games just played often regardless of winning results. I don't think any country puts more pressure on their international team then we do. It's a symptom of the passion we have for the sport in general and it's both wonderful and tragic.

As a Welshman living in England I say good luck tonight! The Italians are still my team (I started following them at World Cup '94 at the age of 9, mainly because I liked blue) but watching the EPL and being a Liverpool fan I want to see the players do well.

Agreed with the first point.

The second is somewhat questionable. The only qualifier with any excitement was the Kosovo game where we shipped 3 goals. The others apart from the Czech Republic game were like watching training sessions.

I regularly bet on the handicap in international games and the odds were shocking for even a -4 handicap in most of our games.

and Harry Kane, who tries. Kind of.

But we do believe they can play - and Saka being forced to start showed just how different we can be. But then? Half time and Southgate drums in his tactics of defend defend defend. However, having seen how well Czech Rep closed ranks in that last game once they went ahead I think Southgate was right to urge caution. Just we should be getting 2-0 before we resort to implement plan park-the-bus.

Precisely this.

Southgate and the England players have a hunger to win, I don’t understand why that’s in any doubt.

I think part of the problem is people think the squad is a lot better than it is. When we’ve played attacking football in the past few years we’ve conceded silly goals and defence has always looked full of mistakes.

We have seen in the past few days why that doesn’t work in knockout football even with the best attacking players in the world.

I genuinely think fortifying the defence and playing to keep control, while not exciting to watch, gives the best chance for our particular team to win the tournament. I think it will be more fun to watch against a side like Germany too because hopefully there’ll be more room and chances to counter.

There’s every chance we won’t win but I genuinely believe we can.

Last two times we beat Germany were when we attacked and didn't stop. Mind you we had Vardy's pace to keep them occupied. We don't really have that in this squad. I think it's a mistake not bringing Watkins. DCL just isn't going to start ever, and will be a mistake if he does.

Exactly. People can be as romantic and positive as they want but sensibility tells us to base the near future on the recent past and Southgate has a bunch of top class players who he has playing like a bottom of the table PL team facing the big boys every game. You can perhaps do that with players who are used to it and thats the only way they can mix it with the bigger teams but we have a great set of players who have almost all been at or near the top of the PL, CL & EL and he has them playing like minnows.

Part of the reason England struggle on the national stage is that we don't have a strong national footballing identity. Part of it is that we keep appointing managers who are dour and quite often a bit regressive in their football. Southgate has as much business managing at the top level as Wayne Rooney. Maybe in 15 years he will be top class but this current idea that you can just take a decent footballer and make them into a manager is ridiculous.
