UEFA Euro 2020 Round of 16 ** spoilers ** [26th - 29th June 2021]

Have to say I disagree and that will be rectified when he's banging 40 goals in next season for City. ;)
Kane the new Aguero? Nah. If he goes I bet 25 goals tops, and that's if they're stupid enough to take him. I think they could spend their money more wisely tbh, but it would be great to see what Pep could develop him into. I just hope he has enough playing career left to benefit us in future tournaments. Qatar will be a write off due to the heat etc. I would prefer we boycott it altogether tbh on ethical grounds but it seems the FA apparently isn't too fussed about those concerns. I guess it's the thing of everyone else is going so... but taking an ethical stand could also save us the embarassment as the pasty white englanders get sunburnt and crash out huffing and puffing in the crazy temps and humidity. Odds must surely favour an equatorial/tropical country to snag that one I think?

Interestingly on Chris evans radio show this morning they had a guy on who has studied penalties and written a book on it. His conclusion was it was anything but luck. Skill was a given, his research concluded it was about physiology and nerves and if you controlled them then you have given yourself the best chance.

In my opinion, its much the same as something like Poker. There are professional poker players who are very good at it but it is ultimately a game of luck. You can stack the odds in your favour as much as you like due to skill but its a game of luck at its core.

If the player put the ball top corner with pace, the keeper would have to go so early to reach it that the player would have time to place it in the opposite corner at their leisure. We don't see that often because its a high risk strategy for the reward of a guaranteed goal.

If the player puts it anywhere else in the goal the keeper could reach it if they predict the correct side and height etc. There is luck and statistics to that. How confident is the player? Where do they normally put the ball? Is there much variance in their penalty technique and preferences, how good is the keeper at saving penalties etc.

Having the nerve to put away penalties in high stakes games is a given really. I know that hindsight is 20:20 but there are some players that are walking up and you can just see that they are not confident. Maybe they still score but you can see it. Mbappe had that look about him yesterday. I watched a little highlights reel of Pogba in the game and he put Mbappe in at least 4 times and he fluffed every chance. He hadn't had a good tournament and you could just see that he wasn't confident. That being said, I don't think his penalty was bad. His bad luck/form just continued unfortunately.

He's scored against far better teams in the Premier League and Champions League, also doesn't go missing for half the season like Vardy has done for the last two seasons which has cost Leicester CL football twice in a row.
No, that was more down to injuries, particularly long spells out for Ndidi and Maddison causing problems in the midfield and a distinct imbalance in service to him. Vardy has however achieved a prem title and an FA cup. What silverware has Kane had in an arguably better side? Err, would that be nothing?

Pretty sure someone else said it earlier. We will take the lead and then Southgate will **** himself and try and defend a 1-0 lead for the rest of the game only for us to lose 3-1. He will come out after the game praising the team and saying how good the Germans are and then he will get a contract extension soon after because we have 0 ambition as a country.

This guy seems to disagree https://virginradio.co.uk/the-chris...s-new-book-and-why-gareth-southgate-should-be interesting read regardless of your view point.

Back when I was a kid I played footie at a reasonable level nothing fancy, I remember a coach telling me there is no way you should miss a penalty when the area is XX percentage bigger than a goalkeeper. I agree with that and also agree there is an element of luck with it but isn’t there luck involved in most aspects of sport?

Guess I should have posted this here... :p

Just about to finish work and get the beers flowing, ready for an evening of frustration and disappointment - followed by a poor nights sleep and my daughter waking up at 1-2am for a couple of hours.

Bring it on. :)

They spoke about it a bit last night on ITV, they all agreed it was skill-based. If it was mostly about luck it would be easy to point out in the statistics, whereas it's not, as you have certain teams and individuals with great penalty records.
