I think England are a bit like when you pick a dream team on a computer game but wonder why you can't win with them. It's because they have no chemistry, no team wide approach or joined up tactics. They are a team that lacks good management to play to our strengths. I like Gareth but he's out of his depth now in his approach. It's not good enough.

Apparently "We don't have a natural replacement for Kalvin Philips." Which is why we look clueless in midfield.
in terms of team selection the one I really don’t understand is Trent playing the Kalvin Philips role all the others are justifiable but playing a right back/winger as a holding midfielder makes no sense what so ever I’d much rather see Gallagher or Mainoo start round pegs in round holes and all that. Beyond that the performance makes no sense I don’t for a minute think the coaching staff send the players out with instructions for the whole team to play so deep we get over run and to pass the ball around like they’ve never met each other before yet that is what they have done both games so far.

Southgate must have a lot of friends in the media given how little the press goes after him.

Southgate out as far as I'm concerned, no more excuses, playing politics, token social gestures should be saving him at this point.
Did you see the Kyle walker interview, basically criticising anyone who criticises that performance. If man city ever played that bad there would be allegations of match fixing, but for England we're supposed to expect nothing and be thankful for it. I hope we get destroyed 5-0 after the groups, I want to buy one of those ABE shirts

Foden refuses to stay left
Forden plays across the 3 behind haaland, he's played just as many games at lw/rw as he does am tho? (For man city obvs)

Ian Wright touched on it, if you are going to shoe horn taa into the team because he's far and away the best passer in English football why have one of the most static attacking units going? I'll say it again, rice and Bellingham were 100 times worse today and yet there's no media dissection of their performances because Trent is the media bully boy.

Booed off the pitch, it must be difficult trying to dig in and perform for what must surely be the worst support in the tournament.
I'm not sure I understand that comment, England's performance was utterly abject this evening the only plus point was they didn't get beat the players should expect to be boo'd off after that they are more than happy to take the compliments and cheers when they play well...

Trent is being played out of positions and it shows which makes him an easy option for a good bashing, nobody was really on it today front to back but managers will always get hammered for picking players out of position when things go badly Keegan bet his job on Southgate as a DM against Germany and lost. It's a tough one as I also remember the search for a left winger in the 90's that gave Jason Wilcox add Stuart Downing etc England caps

Exactly. Look at France. Granted, they weren't great in their first game, but Deschamps had the guts to leave two of the best young midfielders in the world on the bench, in favour of a workmanlike midfield, to give the attack a chance to flourish. Kane, Bellingham and Foden don't all work on the pitch together. To my mind, the answer is Foden for Gordon, as that gives Kane two quick wide men playing off him, and Kane can then drop deep in an appropriate structure. The issue is that he's then effectively playing in Bellingham's position and role. I still think that Bellingham is our best option alongside Rice, and would probably put Eze in that three as the slightly more offensive one.

I also cannot believe that we didn't bring Mitchell for cover at left back, given Shaw's fitness

I’m never going to be fully invested in the national team after what the press etc did to beckham in 98 but I have started getting back into it a bit. What’s going on is pretty strange. I also don’t know why they bother interviewing the players. It was like pulling teeth. None of them will ever answer truthfully. I expected Kyle walker to be honest but came up with lines like “we’ve got more gears in the tank”.

Nobody played well today, but I think the stand out poor performer for me was Bellingham. I think it's in part due to his phenomenal performances for club and country of late, that I had to check he was actually playing tonight (missed the kick off).

I'd rather we get the bad game out of the way now, than later, but we do need to improve.

I have no faith in Pickford at all.... he's one move away from a calamity.

Pickford has been performing though, but I agree 1 move away from calamity, the players are using him to much for pass backs.

England were shocking today, slow balls, some **** ups, not really attacking the list goes on and on, they started well, got the 1st goal then regressed from their.

I was sat there watching them with my fellow u8 football coaches and we were all in agreement, everything we tell the kids not to do, England done tonight. We had half the footie kids with us and they were shouting at the telly picking up the faults.

But as has been said, hopefully that's the bad game out the way (though I thought that with Iceland)

Watched the game live although a little hazy as it was 2am. Watched back extended highlights this morning and it's really no better. It's quite unbelievable how he started with the same team again, even more so he didn't hook TAA at half time and instead waiting until a few minutes into the second half to compound the lads misery further. Feel a bit for him but Gallagher isn't the answer either.
Hard to fathom why he didn't bring a left sided FB. It's stating the obvious but Tripps and Foden out there are drifting in all the time and it didn't take much to stretch that side, time and again. He needs to change the system and if he isn't willing to do that then he has to start without Foden. Anthony Gordon has been tormenting premier league defenders from that left side all season, runs non stop and draws in fouls to help the team get up the pitch so well. Its even more important that he is either telling or letting Kane drop so deep and we have no outlet when under pressure. Makes no sense to me that Gordon has had zero minutes in two games when we were hanging on.

Lets be honest, its one of the easiest groups on paper and England should coast it but they are making very hard work of things. Weird that he is waiting until now to do his Trent and Foden experiment and somehow making this group of players look clueless and lethargic. They all play a high tempo pressing game week in week out in the premier league, yet the bloke that got Middlesbrough relegated 10 years ago thinks he knows a better way to use them. His quotres regarding Kalvin Phillips underlines this.
I've not been a Southgate basher on here, England's recent tournament good record is down to him. So is this one though and he'll be out of a job before Rishi Sunak if things don't change quickly.

TAA has been hung out to dry by him, him and walker are comparable at RB and walker is getting the nod, but safegate doesn’t have the balls to drop either. The team is unbalanced (no play down the left ) and there is no outlet because Kane keeps dropping deep looking for the ball, which then causes him to get in Bellingham’s way and step on his toes.
This team would go a lot further if he rotated walker and TAA, dropped Bellingham next to rice, move Fodden behind Kane/Watkins(Watkins would be my choice) and put Gordon/Eze on the left. That would give much better balance and an outlet down both sides, but it more likely that the only change for Tuesday will be Gallagher for Trent(if he doesn’t keep the same team)
