Kyle Walker is one of the best right backs in the tournament. He's rapid, and has strength with it. He has to keep starting. Trent should just be dropped. Massively overrated player that is just a cross merchant which worked when Klopp's team were top dogs. Him and Foden just don't work in an England shirt.

Foden is weak, can't compete to head the ball and comes inside too much. At least Saka sticks to task and gives us width and pace. I'd rather see Gorden given a shot on left wing.

There's no denying Kane's credentials, but is it time to be brave and drop him for Watkins, who is much more dynamic and has pace. This will allow us to press from the front and get up the pitch. Palmer needs to be given a shot over the likes of Bowen. Bellingham was absolute dog **** in that last game. What on earth happened to him. Even Rice was shanking passes off for corners. They looked absolutely rattled. To be fair, the pitch was awful. What was all that about?

I think the players need to be told - and I can't believe this is required for England in the Euros but hey - to go all out and don't leave anything on the table. Stop playing as though you need to keep some in the tank to get to the 90 minute mark. We'd rather see you hold your hand up at 55 minutes that your knackered and need subbing. Press, press and press as a team.

We don't really do 3 at the back for England do we? Was just thinking, a way to have Trent AND Kyle on the pitch is that we could drop Kyle in on the right side of a back 3 with Stones and Guehi. Then the wing backs could be Trent right side, and Trippier (or ideally Luke Shaw) on the left side. This might give us more width and attack.
I think Rice needs to sit just in front of the defence and whoever else is playing central mid (Bellingham / Palmer ) just push up. Then have Saka and Gordan on the wings with a very high pressing Watkins playing right on the shoulder.

Reality? Southgate starts the same team again and changes nothing? :)

Cross merchant is just lol. Created the most chances but hey its his fault.

I think he is a decent player and certainly fit Klopps Liverpool system perfectly but he shouldn't be playing central midfield in international football ahead of people who play that position every week!

I wouldn't drop Kane his goal scoring record is just way to convincing and Southgate will get murdered if we loose with him on the bench, ask Graham Taylor what happens when you drop you best goal scorer for important games! I'd tell him to give the team an hour at the highest intensity he can manage no dropping deep to pick it up push the defenders back, harry them etc etc then after an hour let Watkins come on with pace to burn.

As I recall he took a free kick and hit it straight into the wall? He also hit about 3 or 4 long balls of which one went through to give Watkins a chance. He thinks he's the modern David Beckham with his long ball efforts. He's good at times, but not good enough to be included in England I feel unless we play a 3-5-2 setup and he goes wing back.

Kane offers nothing, one of the worst strikers to wear a England shirt in my opinion, he never does enough off the ball. He should no longer be starting simple as that.

I get that he has to conserve a bit. All good strikers have to at times, so they are peak for when a chance comes. But Kane takes it to levels where you question his fitness. You see players like Odegaard for Arsenal press more and stay higher than Kane all game, and he's not even a striker!

 he'd been off the field for 16 odd mins before watkins came on

We did in Euro 96. In fact it was very similar to now. First game was terrible so changed to 3 at the back.

Yet again Terry is most likely the best manager we have had since 1966 though.

Oooo thats a tough calll.... underated yes, the best nah, still have to go with Robson as it just such a special time.

One of the worst striker to wear an England shirt? give your head a wobble you are putting a man with 60 international goals on the same list as Kevin Davies, Jay Bothroyd, Francis Jeffers, James Beattie, Danny Ings, Jay Rodriguez, the muppet from preston the pinched the tap in for a debut goal (David Nugent), Michael Rikkets, Patrick Bamford . Harry Kane might not be Mbappe but he rightfully holds a place on the list of the best strikers ever to wear an England shirt not many can even claim to be close.

Robson or Venables is a tough one, for me it was such a shame Venables was forced out when he was I think he would have done a much better job at France '98, at Euro '96 he had the team set up brilliantly and somehow managed the miracle of getting the best out of a messed up Gazza.

I think we can both agree they were both far better than Southgate who on paper is statistically the better England manager.

It is sad closing on nearly 40 that the best time I had as an England fan was my first rememberable England tournament at ten years old!

Are you referring to the guy who is literally England's top goal scorer of all time? This thread is class, what are you going to be like when you actually lose a game?

I don't actually dislike Southgate I think he has been good for English Football he has brought stability and success to the team which was a breath of fresh air following the proceeding nightmare with the end of Hodgsons time and the Allardyce debacle. I think he has gone a tournament too far and he and the team have lost their way, he's had a really long run as England Manager and I think after Qatar on reflection it was time for a change.

Yeah same there. Although 2004 came close just with the whole being 18 and spending it in a pub!

Kane is top class, just needs service. It's less about who's on the pitch right now than the actual tactics and team play. We can keep rotating among all of our decent squad and still the same results will come unless we change. Kane being dropped might change the whole dynamic if we press. It's a potential catalyst rather than a dig at his ability I feel.

I personally have no problem with England not pressing high up the pitch that frequently. It's a complex and risky thing to do, fine for club sides that have seasons to work at it. A mid block is safe and simple for players, considering the amount of time they have to train with each other. It's a fairly obvious thing to do from a managerial viewpoint. But i think we need to be much better with the ball, we look very disjointed. Need some natural width out left, i'd personally go with Bowen because of the last few seasons he's had, he's been excellent. And it would provide some nice variation to Saka. One cutting in and one going on the outside, considering Trippier is always looking to move central as well and not keep to the touchline then Bowen could do a job there for sure.

Not when it matters, I.e competition and take away the penno`s (he might have won them by diving like a fairy to be fair) :)
