***UEFA Women's EURO England 2022***

Exactly, you would find it a ridiculous statement and rightly so. You are also correct in that the only real comparison is that of nationality, and there have been far greater English sporting achievements than that show last night.

The English women are competing against 1 or 2 teams at their level, with the rest barely comparable to a high school team. I mean come on, they've put 10 past Latvia recently.

England are 8th in the world currently but I have no idea how accurate those rankings are as international rankings are quite often completely at odds with the reality.

There are 4 teams above us in the rankings that were in the Euros and we had to beat 2 of them en-route to the trophy. Whatever way you cut it, its a good result and winning any major trophy is nice. The hyperbole is a bit much but you know it would be even worse if England had won the Euros last year.

Well done to the ladies, but I'll echo what others have said regarding the media going a bit overboard with the hyperbole, whilst its obvious that the hyping up of the tournament is an attempt to legistimise the women's game in the wider public opinion the U17's winning the world cup in 2017 was far more of a sporting achievement.

Not sure I get all the negativity in here surrounding the achievement yesterday? Honestly think this is a fantastic result for FOOTBALL, not just womens football.

Watching the coverage yesterday, hearing of where the womens game has come from, to the icing on the cake yesterday of winning a major tournament was quite a thing. Hearing what some of the people of previous generations of womens football had gone through to get to play for their nation was frankly an eye opener when the mens game has it delivered on a plate with plenty to spare. A proper legacy.

Maybe i'm slightly bias as I have a 8 year old daughter, who has enjoys playing football and I want the best opportunities available to her...we're fortunate in our area that the facilities for girls football are fantastic with great coaching but I doubt this is the case across other areas of the country. Hopefully this will give the game a further boost which in turn will continue to lift the a quality of the pool of players.

There were definitely more the 2 teams capable of winning that tournament, not the quantity of potential winners that there are in the mens euros, but England still had to beat two of the more competitive nations to seal the victory. On the world stage that number increases again with the USA et al.

With the added bonus of having no local businesses trashed, or innocent people tear gassed. I found the whole tournament refreshing, a far cry from the men's game which always descends into the more unsavoury parts of human nature.

I took my eldest son to the game yesterday, my thoughts in no particular order:
  • Good friendly atmosphere, I've been to a few games at Wembley FA Cup Semi, Community Shield, England mens etc and it was definitely up there with the best of them.
  • Surprisingly easy to get in, quicker than normal despite the big crowd
  • Ref seemed a bit biased first half, Germany plan seemed to be to rough England up a bit but she was dishing out freekicks and bookings for good tackles by England
  • I thought England started playing for the cornerflag a bit early (one time they got past them at the touchline, running towards goal then pivoted to go back to the corner, with several mins still to play) but to be fair they were pretty effective at timewasting in that corner.
  • Another decent game for Earps although I suppose you could question getting beaten on the near post
  • Germany came out strong after halftime was a bit worried at one point
  • Ridiculous queues for the ladies, I guess because it's the sort of game that will have a much higher proportion of females than normal, they probably built the facilities expecting the vast majority of fans to be male
  • I felt surprisingly unemotional about the victory. I've watched a fair bit of women's football over the past year or two so wasn't just a casual bystander, I've never seen England lift a trophy and yet I still felt a bit non-plussed by it. A sort of surreal feeling at the end whereby I was happy, party going on all around us and I was half thinking "is this it? Shouldn't I be bouncing off the walls or something? What times are the trains home?"

Are the fans all mixed up like a rugby match?

If so, nice to see
There were a few Germans scattered around us, however the majority of German flags seemed to be in one of the opposite corners (the end Germany scored at).

Nice to see an Arsenal player get golden boot and player of the tournament as well :)

I think to be truly ecstatic after something like this you have to be very invested in the result for good or bad. I am the same with United honestly. I like it when we win things but it doesn't register on my "events of the year" scale. Perhaps I was too young in Uniteds heyday or was too used to us winning as I think I would appreciate it more now.

I was happy we won last night but today is just another day. Probably would have been if the men won the Euros too.

I watched a fair bit of this yesterday. I think it's great for women's sport because it shows there is a market for it and can act as a gateway for girls and boys to be inspired to do something other than Instagram or Pokemon Go. The quality of the games was variable and I actually thought England were lucky to beat Spain who were outmuscled after largely playing England off the pitch. However, The women have achieved what the men have failed to do ie won when they weren't necessarily the most gifted side and coped with the pressure and expectation. Well done to them. I normally want England to lose at football but I was genuinely quite chuffed.

I've spent more time watching Tdf Femme avec Zwift in the last week and again its a bit of landmark moment in womens sport. the event stood on it's own right and attracted good TV and live audience throughout. The racing was decent too even if the winner is in a bit of a class of her own.

As a father of two daughters all this can only be good news for the future. Lets hope they can sustain it.

Decent tournament I thought, football is slower paced compared to the mens but the atmosphere seemed nicer and the final was a lot less toxic than the mens embarrassment last year.

This, for someone that doesn't watch football outside of World and Euro it's just an embarrassment watching players roll around, Rio 2014 was insane, I could not believe what what I was seeing with the likes of Nemay. But it reminds of gun control in America, it's basically too late to save it, any sense of common sense and middle ground is lost, there's always..reasons why it can't change and people who will defend diving, toxic masculinity until the grave.

Simply a case of encouraging refs to book players for simulation. Though you did pick one of the worst divers in the game if you meant Neymar, the mans just a complete cheat.

As soon as the stakes get high, the top teams will take any advantage they can and diving gets you a massive advantage. Referees have been encouraging it for years and this is the result. I can virtually guarantee the womens game will go exactly the same way once more money comes into the sport and the stakes get higher.

There were a few times last night when the player overreacted and made a meal out of challenges just as the men do. Its about 10% at the moment but give it a few years.
