***UEFA Women's EURO England 2022***

A great win but yes the press/tv reaction has been a bit over the top.

Also Ian Wright certainly knows how to bring the mood down doesnt he - ranting on and on about attendance at matches etc with wild scenes of celebration going on in the background.

Thing is there are a finite number of people willing to go to see a football match week in week out and also a finite amount of cash available to plow into sport. Whilst I am sure there will be an increase in WSL crowds, if the trajectory continues upwards after that (which I doubt) at some point the Premier League and the WSL will inevitably start competing with each other for punters and sponsor cash....which could get messy.

Why am I not surprised to see people playing down and even mocking the attention this achievement by England women  They've been criminally underfunded by the FA forever, grass roots women's and girl's football is also criminally underfunded. Saying the England U21s win is more of an achievement than this is an insult it really is. Good on them and I hope it gives women's football a massive boost in popularity. I wish the men's game strikers could show such coolness under pressure in massive games.

How can you fund something when the girls just aren't that into it?

Jesus, is this GD? Celebrate the England womens victory and be happy. If the media want to glamourise it or over play it somewhat, so what. Let a bit of cheer in to your miserable lives :p

(And this from someone who doesn’t particularly like womens football)

Who says they aren't? There have been enough people involved in grass roots and schools girls level claiming they are getting little/no support or having to fight to even be allowed to form teams in the past couple of weeks on social media. The FA have been slack to say the least. If they fail to seize on this opportunity to get more and more girls involved in football they should be fired.

I said they aren't, football pitches are everywhere and at no point do you see women playing.

The Daily Mail of all papers (visiting parents, don't judge..) had a really good article about accessibility and participation numbers for boys versus girls at a young age.

There's no doubt a mens team would beat a woman's team all other things being equal due to the physiological differences.

The current gap is only partly driven by that though, and largely driven by having a smaller potential pool of players who have less coaching for less time.

To suggest that being the best in Europe amongst people who have had similar opportunities is somehow a lesser achievement than an FA Cup or youth competition win is laughably OCUK.

Please provide evidence of all of these women desperate to play football but can't use jumpers for goal posts anywhere and can't progress..... I'll wait bud.

My own experience is that my daughter, by the time she was given the opportunity at school, was playing against mainly boys who had played for a couple of years, they refused to pass to any girls and put them off from day 1.

I've tried to encourage her to join a girls team, but finding them is harder and TBH, she's totally put off the idea by the early experience she had anyway.

So your daughter can't find other girls to play with basically because the need isn't there.

The need is there, to some extent. You dont see loads of girls playing for exactly the reason above for one. The opportunity isn't there, in many areas, at younger ages and any girl who might like to try football struggle to find a team or dont get the chance at school. Where as for boys, its a piece of ****. There is a golden opportunity here to increase participation in football for women. I really dont see the issue.

Also we are getting better looking pundits than Alan Shearer. :D
