***UEFA Women's EURO England 2022***

Give it a chance ffs. It has been badly underfunded for years. After what the FA did to women's football in banning it for 50 years you'd think they might be looking to make up for lost time because even after they lifted the ban they did **** all for decades to correct the damage they did. More sponsorship will come into the game over the next few years and more girls will take it up and so the quality will get better and better but it needs more coaches at grass roots and more clubs at grass roots and that takes money. There were 38k fans at the NLD in 2019 so clearly there are fans that want to watch it.

It's been given a chance. The womens game is being subsidised by the mens game currently, and has been for quite a while actually. It's that simple. Like i said, 20/30 years ago, there weren't the avenues for girls really. Not currently, that isnt whats going on in the game. I'm a coach, i see it myself. The drop out rate is unbelievably high with girls. They do it for 6 months or a year and then stop.

I might be a bit of an odd one out in this thread as I don't tend to watch football and I just don't really like it. Well, the diving and rolling really gets to me and sometimes a game can be very slow pace and dull, but that can be the same with many sports. Anyway, that's a whole separate issue  Having watched and really enjoyed the final, (and this might sound condescending) but I was really impressed by the level at which they played. I feel like I watched a women's game 10-20 years ago and they were miss kicking and dribbling quite slowly and such and I was amazed how poor it was, but not this year, it was fantastic.

So, finally, on to my question - I watched the pinnacle, the two best teams. I also notice there were some big score lines and fairly one-sided games. Are some countries still at that poor level of women's football?

I guess, in understanding how big this is, I'm trying to grasp where women's football is throughout Europe. No, not all sport is equal and not all accomplishments are equal. I've captained England in a sport. I think technically I've been a champion of Europe?! (At Uni level) But I get that it's in a sport that not many people even try and it's just not that big of a deal. Hell, you could make your own sport up now, hold your own World Championship and claim to be a World Champion! If that's one end of the scale and the Men's World Cup is the other end of the scale, where does our Women winning the Euro's sit on that scale?

Also Ian Wright certainly knows how to bring the mood down doesnt he - ranting on and on about attendance at matches etc with wild scenes of celebration going on in the background.
Yeah, I thought this. Him and.... Alex(?) both seemed to get quite bitter. Almost wanting to stuff the win in the faces of those that didn't support the sport. As you say, to me it didn't seem to fit with the celebrations that were going on, which were amazing. Loved the attempted interview with the second goal scorer (Chloe Kelly?), but she just ran off to sing and carry on celebrating with her teammates.

I wonder if the people commenting on women's football being subsidised by men's football realise just how stupid that comment is? In the 20/21 season WSL sides lost a combined £10m. In contrast PL sides that same season lost approximately £1bn. Maybe we need to get rid of a load of PL sides that are relying on subsidies to survive. In fact let's extend that to the EFL. Very soon 92 pro clubs would become sub 10.

I was channel hopping earlier in the year and there was a women's FA Cup game on, it was a semi or quarter final i think. There were hundreds in the crowds rather than thousands. It will be interesting to see whether attendances increase next season due to the win as there clearly was no where near as much interest prior to it. I think it needs to grow organically for a bit rather than chucking loads of extra money at it.

Mens clubs can make it up.

Because the money is there to back them up through TV deals, sponsorships and the rest. Do I really have to explain that?
Yes, you do need to explain because despite the tv deals, sponsorships and the rest, they're still losing money. The argument about women's football needing to be subsidised by men's football is nothing short of nonsense. Men's football cannot even pay for itself.

I'm not sure why some people are trying to knock the women's game. The fact our English women have won a tournament after being banned from playing and underfunded not even that long ago in relation to the mens game is a exceptional feat.

Why would you not just been happy and celebrate that women from your country won a international tournament on home soil? It's not a contest between genders etc, they won...for England!

If the women's game grows then so be it. That's fantastic and opens up more opportunities for women who have had their game surprised for years.

All of the arguments about revenue etc is kind of dead beat when their game is still in development, heck they were banned in what 1921 for 50 years!!! It's incredible they've won something.

Trying to knock the tournament because there was some big scores is pathetic, men's teams San Marino and Liechtenstein get battered all the time.

Does it really hurt you to see women play and achieve things in sport? If it does you've got some serious problems. Just enjoy the fact they won and achieved something, stop trying to compare them with the mens game. Some people just want to play my dad is bigger than your dad

I think you should be moaning to the press, because what your moaning about it exactly what the press are doing (comparisons to the me a game)

I'm not sure that's a reference to my question, if so a bit odd of you to say I'm trying to knock the game? I don't know football well enough, do San Marino and Liechtenstein usually go to the finals?

As explained, all sports and tournaments fit along the scale of how big an accomplishment it is, I was just asking where women's football fits at this point?

Again, I really enjoyed the game, I thought they played amazing and deserved the win and all the credit they're getting. I'm just trying to understand exactly how big it is :)

They aren't mutually exclusive, both need to subsidised, especially lower clubs in the mens game. Lower clubs in the mens game and the women's game are massively subsidised by the PL clubs and revenue they generate. Nothing wrong it in my book, it's what makes the English game at all levels better than European leagues.
