Uh-oh. PS3 'Orange Box' fails.

I love this."Held up by PS3 development". What a joke. It's like people expect that a games company should only have to build one version of a game and that version should work perfectly for every platform out there.

Analyst Michael Pachter believes development difficulties on PS3 forced Take-Two to delay the highly Grand Theft Auto IV for both PS3 and Xbox 360.

"We think it is likely that the Rockstar team had difficulty in building an exceptionally complicated game for the PS3, and failed to recognize how far away from completion the game truly was until recently," Pachter said in a statement.

"We think it is also likely that Take-Two had a contractual commitment to Sony that it would not favor competitor Microsoft by launching the Xbox 360 version of GTA IV prior to launching the PS3 version, and believe that any delay of the PS3 version necessitated a delay of the Xbox 360 version," he added.

Because Naughty Dog are teamed with Sony, as are Incognito.
Infinity Ward have excellent programmers and it's clear a lot of care has gone into it, but at what cost, CoD4 lost a lot of its press early on in development because of other games so we don't know whether it was held up by PS3 development like Grand Theft Auto 4 has been for example.

It's not just EA, as has been said, there are only really DiRT and Sega Rally that run identically compared to the Xbox360.

There are plenty more than just dirt and sega rally that run identically to the 360, what about Assassins Creed (which was fixed with a firmware update), Ninja Gaiden, RB6Vegas (I personally find it better on PS3 as it has less motion blur but thats personal taste)

Name one dev who is struggling with the PS3 other than EA?

Your point? It just reiterates the fact that because development for 360 easily translates to a PC release means that dev companies are loving the fact they only need to code for one system now. They build a game, get 2 versions to release on 2 patforms, and sod the rest. They'll make some excuse like "the PS3 is too complicated", but since other devs have managed it it seems this is not a viable defence.

I don't blame them though, in todays competitive world, they need to produce games as cheap and quickly as possible. Microsoft have given them this option and there's not much the competition can do.

Until we have open platform gaming expect to play all your games on a microsoft platform :(

Why cause you don't like it?

No, because of some of the bull he's said in the past. Don't go looking for quotes, unless you check out the source. He's terrible.

Here's another quote Michael is known for saying, And there are more. He's terribly clueless when it comes to the video game industry.

Michael said:
I don't think there are four million people in the world who really want to play online games every month.

Surely it was obvious? you said GTA being held up cause of the PS3 was a joke, I gave you quotes suggesting otherwise.

Correction, you gave a quote from a dubious source.

Any reference to PS3 being "difficult" to code for is bull, what they actually mean is:

"when we tried our xbox 360 code on the PS3 it didn't seem to work. It may take some time to understand why this is and then fix whatever is wrong with the ps3 that doesn't like our xbox code, this will certainly delay the release of the game"

Dev companies have been saying the same thing for generations, only now is it that a company with multiple platforms with a unified dev platform for both is the most popular. Which basically means the end of competitive gaming platforms.

i cant remember who it was, But whoever it was, a Dev team, Split their company into sections, and actually had 2 dev teams working on both the 360 version and PS3 version separately. And it worked out.

I think it may have been assassins creed. But as said, I don't remember who exactly.

So it just takes devs to actually focus on both, and not 1 then the other.

And you are a more credible source?

You think that any developer thinks 360 code will work on PS3?

Nope, but perhaps this might shed some light:

"Former MICROSOFT employee Gabe Newell controls whether or not Valve makes the port. Newell about a month ago said the PS3 was difficult to program for, yet I know a senior programmer in the industry that told me he was able to get the Torque engine running on the PS3 and had no problems programming for it at all. He said it's more that the business men would rather have a one console industry than a three console industry. So they toss support behind one and says the other does not work so the consumers go "Oh well if Designer A says it sucks then it MUST!"

Now don't take this as a credible source, but the business sentiment of the quote is what matters. The fact is other devs have had no problems porting to the PS3, and there are numerous successfull games to prove it. The only reality here is that businesses only want a one console market to reduce dev costs and up profits. Competition is bad for business, and they can taste it now that ms are doing so well. They want the PS3 to fail because it will line their pockets, and they will say anything to make this dream a reality.

I'm sure I read somewhere recently that devs are beginning to suss that it's easier to port from PS3 to 360/PC, than it is the other way round, so in future we may well see a lot more games coming out with the PS3 as the lead format.
Damned if I can remember where I read it though.
