UK Kindle and E-Books...

I've got an older e-reader, brilliant piece of kit imo.

I use it for reading old books, as you can get them all for free legally online, but for new releases, you just can't beat a hardback.

There is a hell of a lot of good, free, legal books online for these things. Worth in purchase price of the reader alone for me

Im staying with my paper/hardbacks thank you very much.

I can see why many people will enjoy and prefer e-books to the traditional paper format but nothing can convince me to change :)

I collect books as well as readnig them and love my books :p

I do think that e-books are the next step though but I think there will always be a place for the traditional book.

Does it mean 50% better contrast than the previous generation Kindle? That sounds a big improvement. And 3500 books! Feel like I should have waited a month and got this one.

Yes, 50% better than the old Kindle2.
Although I didn't have a Kindle2, the display on the KDXG (which is the same technology and the K3) was a lot better than my BeBook mini, even without a side-by-side comparison.

When I can get ebooks for as cheap or cheaper than real books I will probably consider an ebook reader. Until then I will stick with real books.

How come the Uk site are only selling the 6" Kindle update in the UK. If they stocked the DX I would buy one, don't really want the have to shell out the extra import duty from US site.

<edit>
...actually having had a closer look at the new 6" Kindle I'm tempted to replace my Sont PRS600 with one. Anyone know if I can convert my already paid for DRM managed epubs to me used on the Kindle ?

You pay for the duty anyway.

Kindle 3 wifi = $139 (from Amzon.com) = ~£92 (@ $1.50=£1.00), add VAT @17.5% = £108

KDXG = $379 = ~£252, add VAT = £296. I just went through the process of ordering a KDXG and the final price shown is £312

I paid £315 for my KDXG last week.

Just need to decide if I want a large screen or can live with a smaller one.

Hows the XG for PDF and tech books like Programming books. I struggle with the Sony as the flow of the code snips and some diagrams just go missing.

Cheers.

....for a while I was tempted to get an ipad as a replacement. I came to my senes thankfully.

I've been reading ebooks for about 5 years now, haven't bought a paper book since!

Only thing is, I absolutely cannot stand e-paper displays. I think they're slow, ugly and hurt my eyes (as does paper itself, so I guess it follows!) give me a nice backlit LCD screen any day of the week!

I was using an HP iPAQ 214 until a couple of months ago when I switched to using my phone (iphone 3gs back then, now an iphone 4). Great reading devices. :)

anyone got one then
how does this whole 3g thing work, can I use the internet via it or is it JUST for books?

At the moment it is mainly for books from Amazon. All internet access goes through Amazon, so I suspect that eventually they will block general internet access and only allow access to Amazon book catalogue.

If you really want internet access on an ereader, the Onyx Boox 60 (aka BeBook Neo) are probably better. They only have wifi, but do have touch screens.
