UK Kindle and E-Books...

I dont quite understand, so we can only buy the old model? and it has to come from the US?

is the Whispernet up and running over here? apparantly you pay $1.99 per download as you are 'outside' of the US?

More portable?

I took Stalingrad, 3001, Trudi Canavans trilogy and trading in the zone on holiday. I would not have taken all of them in book form on holiday with me!!

Good point, but I was thinking of the e-book reader itself. Having said that, I've just noticed that they now come in true "pocket size" models, so I concede the point.

:)

Sorry....you like the smell of CDs?

Well, it takes all sorts I guess :D

haha no I mean I was the same as in I liked to have them and didn't, for a long time, consider the convenience of buying/acquiring music online made up for not physically having them, and the box, and the inlay and stuff.

Then it all got faster and easier and the convenience then outweighed the loss of something physical.

I reckon it'll take longer with books though. They're a much more tactile thing than a movie or a song, the feel of them is more of a part of the experience.

I only use an N95 along with Mobipocket to read Ebooks on, but I have to say it works well, I've read so much more books since getting into eBooks about a year ago (it can be awkward carring a book around at time, but you'll always have your mobile on hand), and its easy on the eyes, as long as you set reasonably easy colours for the text and background. I found that Dark green text / black background was the best for me after a bit of trial and error.

I might look into a Kindle but I don't really see any benefit for me seeing as I don't find my wee LCD screen tiring on the eyes.

I was looking at getting this but be aware that it is shipped from the USA so you need to pay about £50 in shipping and import duty.

Iv recently started reading books, and while i still prefer proper books i have been reading a few ebooks on my N97. Only becuase i got a few free from the ovi store, but its not too bad. Ideal for when your on the tube / train.

Yup

Tax will likely be around £30 VAT + duty at whatever they class it as + any handling fees.

I'm not a great fan of the Kindle from a look/use POV, compared to the Sony/bebook etc it seems to have a lot of wasted space on the front given over to the buttons (ok, maybe not hugely wasted, but if you just want to read a book, that is wasted), and I beleive a smaller screen than the Sony 505/600.

From a reading point of view it should be pretty much identical to the Sony/bebook models and be about as close as can be to reading printed matter in terms of where/how you can read it.

No idea of battery life, but assuming you can turn off the mobile phone connectivity it should be good (I read about 3000 pages on my 505 without a recharge, and if the Kindle can turn of it's wispernet it should be similar).

I've had a Sony reader for a while now and find myself missing it whenever I go back to paper books. It's just so much more comfortable to hold.

I find myself reading a lot more since I got it as well. Probably because if there is a book you really feel in the mood to read you can have it within a few minutes instead of waiting a few days for it to come in the post.

Im the same. The reader can hold a 1000 books but I find only putting on 5 or so helps keep me focused.

When you can get the Discworld series in eBook format, sign me up.

Nothing can beat the look and feel of a good book, or seeing an entire collection of your favourite authors books on your bookcase - but for portability and storage... these eReaders are going to be big things in the future.

Maybe not yet though, there seems to be too many titles missing

I've had a Sony PRS-505 for nearly 2 years now, had it shipped from the US back when it was $2 to the £ and they didn't charge any import duty as it was marked as a book :)
I still buy hardback versions of books I want to own, but otherwise I'm all about the eReader, if I'm traveling or going on holiday it's invaluable as I can take a selection of books on a device half the thickness of your average paperback. The eInk screens are amazing to read on and the battery life is outstanding.
The epub standard that sony uses now for books is open and used by a multitude of different bookstores, with or without DRM, it's also the format used by google library for public domain texts.
They are still relatively expensive but definitely one of the best tech devices I've ever bought.
