UK plans age verification for porn websites from 2018

Uhhhh, the internet. This is why I have almost 0 ******* sympathy for anyone that complains about something they don't know about or can't do these days. You sit there on your phone for 4 hours+ every single damn day gawping at utter **** on facebook and yet your can't use google to find out how to make your children a healthy dinner. You google all the D list celebrities that are oh so important to your life to see what other D list celebrity they happen to be banging that week but you can't google how to put parental controls on your router. You buy your kid a smartphone with the entire internet available to them but don't think its your fault they can look at porn all day long.

Perhaps if people took some vague responsibility for their kids and their upbringing we wouldn't have to make ridiculous attempts to encroach on peoples freedoms. Whos going to pick up the bill when people are using their credit cards to access porn sites and surprise surprise, their details are sold an their money goes missing. I don't think the banks are going to be keen to refund you. Surveillance powers won't stop terrorists. They are not retards, they will just adapt.

If your enemy can only shoot you from 100m away you don't stand 1 mile away, you stand 120 metres away. If their gun gets better you move further back. Terrorists will/are already using end to end encryption. People doing stuff they shouldn't will always find a way to do it. What happened when the US introduced their massive new trucks to stop casualties from IEDs in Afghanistan? They just made bigger IEDs.

oh how i hope than when push comes to shove that people have the brains to understand this, and the balls to say it out loud before its too late.

the internet hasn't made anything new in humanity, it's all existed for as long as we have. all the internet has done is hold up a magnifying glass to us to make everything we are easier to see. before the internet there was still porn, there was still rape, there was still paedophilia and murder and terrorism and every other thing we're capable of, the internet hasn't created these problems, it's just made them easier to see.

the ira performed a reign of terror long before the internet or end to end encryption and guess who's book ISIS will take a leaf out of if they take out encryption?

Fantastic post :) totally agree.

Another way of looking at the UK plans age verification for porn websites is the clumsy effect in monetising porn as a revenue stream for the government.

Its only right that its stopped, all these sexy porn stars coming over here and stealing the jobs of good old fashioned British porn stars, its just wrong.

The giant unkempt British bush is practically non existent these days because of how many trimmed ones are flooding through our borders.

No doubt Rupert Murdoch had a hand somewhere, no pun intended, over concerns of dwindling sales of the Sun from page 3 having to compete with porn.

I missed the early post about this, but I agree that trash tv/reality tv does way more damage to young minds.

Makes then become fame-chasing, vapid idiots, who idolise other vapid idiots. Plenty of tweens emulating what they see from the likes of Geordie Shore, Love Island, etc.

So the question is how do you educate the parents?

You wait. The incomprehensibility of the Internet is something common to OUR parents. The current generation of parents tends to understand the Internet a lot better. They know what a router is. They know what an ISP is. The Conservative party are solving yesterday's problems today.

Problem is this forum is atypical to society in Britain. Most people wouldn't have a clue and as you say society seems to think it normal to have a Facebook or whatever account - a lot of wifi hotspots now ask you to sign in via twitter or facebook.... i do think it's quite strange to see an 8 year old with a smartphone... but maybe that's just my age showing.

Parental Control software is the best answer, imo. Nothing is impossible to get round, but when you refuse to accept 90% and insist on 100%, you often end up with something that is worse than if you accepted the 90%. They'll be able to look at it on that one kid's phone or tablet, but you've never been able to close that hole and probably never will. Ensure their phone / tablet / computer is locked and has a parental control system and you're about as good as you're likely to get. It achieves the stated goals better than this credit card control and with fewer deleterious side-effects. Parental Control software wont be 100% effective but there's no reason its blacklist should be less up to date than the governments DNS blocking. They can use the same agencies for updates, after all.

And I believe that it is well within the capabilities of modern parents to install parental control software.

perhaps it will mean the future youth will be more grateful when they find an old grumble mag stuck in a bush or blowing around some empty garages

Could well be pressure from some members of the adult industry (I'm sure some lords or ministers will have interests in them) trying to kill off the free sites.

Thing is they must know how easy it is to get around unless they plan on blocking vpn / proxy services.

Should concentrate on education and letting kids know that the stuff is fake and that a relationship is very different (especially when married :p)

I don't get why this is needed.

1. Kids don't have an income & therefore can't buy phones with an internet contracts.
2. Home internet already comes with parental control options, if some bible thumping family doesn't want naughty pictures on the PC then request it blocked from the ISP.
3. It won't work, kid will bypass it.

I'm in favour or restricting children's access - but the raw internet really isn't the place for a child anyway. Restrict devices, not the entire net.

I also have zero trust or faith in the implementation of this or as to if these powers will be abused.

Agree that if any restrictions should require placing, it should be at the user level with common sense parenting, rather than stupid and costly government proposals which will be ineffective.

Even if you disagree with the implemention, the principle is sound - porn will wreck havoc on generations of kids who will have warped views of women - imagine being a 13 year old jerking off to women with enormous boobs and planetoid butts, then having that as the psychological 'standard' for women - they would never be attracted to the women they meet in every day life, and their penises would be desensitized from all the masturbation. They'd be nervous wrecks in bed.

Your idea of causality is not sound.

You don't become a habitual masturbator just by seeing a hardcore porn clip when you're 17 as opposed to when you're 18 lmao.

Are you really saying that a person will turn into a hypersexual masterbater if he sees a clip of some hard core?

Ok lets just assume you're right, even if a person has never seen big breast hot porn until their 18th birthday, won't they enjoy it anyway? Or are you assuming they will still use the same stuff they had to masturbate over when they were 13?

Also, what is the 13 year old going to replace the porn with instead? You think you can just repress someone's hypersexuality by banning the mechanism for their sexual release and forcing them to masturbate over OTHER things instead??

Or do you think he will magically stop masturbating and his libido will cease to exist just because some old politicians with cobwebs growing in their genitals are jealous of all the hot pornstars out there showing off their breasts?

Also you're potentially FORCING them to pursue completely different avenues for the attainment of their naturally required sexual release.

If there are any individuals out there who cannot differentiate their sexual FANTASIES from their sexual realities then there is something wrong with that individual. No one stays naive and immature forever (unless you have an actual retardation), once you get to maturity you automatically realise the realities of sex and that it's not about Debbie doing Dallas over 14 volumes or something. LOL.

I worked and had an income from about the age of 13 or 14 (worked doing a paper round and stacking shelf's at local super market)
And then had full time job when I was 15
