That latter bit is way too simplistic. I think the unpreparedness was a general issue at a higher level but the other issues are still potentially there irrespective of the composition of the Russian forces.
 
Maybe it's as simple as Ukraine knowing it was too difficult to defend (higher pro-Kremlin sympathy + flatter ground + heavy air/naval assets in Crimea) and thus decided to keep the bulk of their forces situated elsewhere.

It'd be a crappy pill to swallow but ensuring the nation's survival is critical so some sacrifices are unfortunately necessary, but I'm sure there's been plenty of mistakes as well that we're not going to hear about for some time.

True the terrain is not favourable for defence at all, though not that favourable to offence either - it outright plays to whoever can bring the heaviest weapons.

EDIT: Also easier for Russia to take air superiority in the area due to the proximity to their bases and air-defence systems, etc. and the terrain doesn't provide much cover from air attack.

EDIT2: There are some videos somewhere of the fighting just over the Antonovskiy Bridge - looks like Ukraine got driven off their heavier weapons quite quickly. This is the only one I can find quickly - there are better videos on it https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y1dXAs2ybIU

That doesn't explain not blowing the bridges nor the subsequent arrests nor the lack of preparedness.

Hmm some context needed in that xi commentary - one statement says china will not open market and the other says it wants more trade. Therefore trade is onesided.

Does it really matter.. Xi is nearly as bad as Putin, although not as crazy. Both Xi and Putin changed the law so they could stay in power longer... says it all. I can only hope after Putin falls, Xi is next, but it won't happen.
