Russia vetoes UN resolution to set up an international tribunal into the downing of Malaysia Airlines flight MH17. Now why would they do that if the flight was downed by the Ukrainian air force?

The UN is broke, every time the UK or US want a resolution on something Russia just veto's it. They recently vetoed a resolution to have the Srebrenica massacre declared a genocide. There just doing to spite the west who have crippled Russia with sanctions, looking at recent reports coming from Eastern Ukraine trouble is flaring up again which could lead to even harsher sanctions.

Are you saying all the permanent powers do not do this when it suits them?

How many times has the US vetoed UN resolutions against Israel?

They have all done it.

Well not to state the obvious but the same reason they have repeatedly said it was a bad idea: They are trying to broker peace between Kiev and the rebels and are worried that inflaming the situation will shatter the uneasy truce that is being halfheartedly adhered too by both sides.

It's pretty obvious it was Ukrainian rebels who most likely shot it down, the is no reason not to delay an investigation until after peace has been finalized, unless you actually want widespread fighting to resume.

Trying to do this now would be the same as arresting Jerry Adams during the formation of the NI peace process, a stupid idea that would ruin the good work done, cause chaos and cost many lives.

Bingo. The UNSC is a joke. It should be a rotating membership pulled from random countries with a 3-4 year term. Or something like that.

Nailed it. They are still maintaining the tired old "din do nuffin" meanwhile everyone else sees through their ****.

Riiiiight. Supplementing the rebels with weapons/ammo/vehicles/soldiers sure is helping to broker peace and is definitely in no way just drawing this entire process out for years and creating a frozen conflict. Honest!

So do all the permanent members that's why they bother to be permanent iirc the yanks have vetoed many more resolutions orcalls fpr action than Russia.

I don't have definitive list of who and when but I'm guessing most of the US veto's would have involved Israel with either Russia or China condemning Israel's decision to build settlements. I'm not going to say that wrong or right but it's not comparable to the genocide committed by Serbia in the Bosnia war.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Nations_Security_Council_veto_power

The United States has used the veto on 82 occasions <snip>
Russia or the Soviet Union have used the veto on 124 occasions<snip>

Oh and you cant call it genocide, Russia also veto'd that

Russia has vetoed a United Nations Security Council resolution that would have described the Srebrenica massacre as "genocide".

Oops!

Of course we'll still have the usual muppets in here denying it. I don't get why we have such a load of putin fan boys on here!

The aren't really many if any Putin fan boys in this thread, the difference is that the anti Putin/Russia guys see the neutral people as pro-Russian because they don't blindly believe everything anti-Russia and choose to question it/require proof.
