Not sure if already reported but the Russians have finally replied to the Saky airbase bombing. They've launched cruise missiles as a train station in Dnipro region causing extensive damage and one train cart took a direct hit, dozens of civilians dead and injured

Their flying very close to Russian controlled air space. I would have though the Russians would have launched fighters to warn them off.

Usually there is an AWACS or similar platform circling off the coast of Romania and I doubt they are up there alone - almost certainly some kind of fighter cover. They'd probably see any response a long way off and pull out if necessary long before Russian assets could get into range - though unfortunately any kind of Russian response doesn't show up on the normal flight radar sites and I've not seen any reports of any significant response.

Though would be kind of odd if they got that close without Russia sending up an escort.

Which took a considerable proportion of the USA and U.K. military to control the cities and the major towns. ISAF controlled nothing beyond the range of their binoculars from each fire base.

And that was two of the best equipped and trained military forces on the planet against a bunch of uneducated peasants with next to zero training equipped with ageing Soviet era infantry weapons and comms supplied by Radio Shack.

Supporting Ukraine against Russia will require NATO to train replacement Ukrainian troops at WW2 rates because the one thing Russia has plenty of is manpower.

It doesn't necessarily as it's not mobilising and is currently struggling to recruit.

Also, Russia is the occupier here facing partisans in regions it has occupied, not Ukraine, granted it's taking a rather heavier approach than the US or UK as the Russians are using filtration camps, men of fighting age are liable to be killed/tortured etc.. or forcibly conscripted.

Russia's borders are also quite empty currently, there is little or no defences along the Chinese and finish borders as all professional soldiers were sent to Ukraine

Russia even called back soldiers it had engaged overseas from Syria and Africa

Finland border area is strangely empty, especially given the proximity to strategic locations like Murmansk. Though I notice they seem to be upgrading and populating some of the airbases in the area, but the more forward ground force bases and depots appear emptied out and falling into disuse.

Troop drawdown in other areas though isn't so excessive - only around 1/3rd pulled back.

Afghanistan was the start of the fall of the Soviet Union and by the looks of it Ukraine is the start of the fall of the short lived Putin Regime and I cannot wait! These brave Ukrainian fighters have stopped these degenerate russians soldiers from frogstomping across europe which is what Putler dreamnt of. Retaken Poland? Ha!

Having read this - https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/interactive/2022/russia-fsb-intelligence-ukraine-war I no longer believe they want to frogstomp across Europe, they just wanted Ukraine and thought it was going to be easy, not expecting such resistance and definitely not thinking it would be months of brutal war, Vladimir seems to have dug himself into a hole he can't get out of with Ukraine

He almost certainly did want more than Ukrain. He thought Ukrain would last 3 days, yes he was that deluded he thought the would just all surrender.
He then installs a puppet government, locks everything down then next was Moldova, easier to take through Transnistria which they already control then onto Finland and beyond.

I think its pretty well known he had a vision of getting the old soviet union back as deluded as that sounds I think he believed he was invincible through reputation as a superpower.

I don't think there was any plans to push on across Europe, maybe some long term fantasies, but definitely former Soviet states were on the agenda. (Amongst other things there has been increased espionage, etc. activities by Russian or Russian supporting elements within many of them).

In mid-February, Ukraine’s foreign intelligence service, the SZRU, sent agents into Russia to carry out surveillance operations on military units. One team encountered a Potemkin village of Russian hardware, officials said, with dozens of parked tanks accompanied by a small security detail. No tank operators or maintenance crews were anywhere in the vicinity.

Shame they couldn't have blown them up there and then. For me it was one of the signs that war might be more likely than not to happen - Russia was continuing to move hardware forward in "exercises" then draw back the manpower and a show of some hardware, but leaving an ever increasing pile of hardware behind each time forward staged.
