Ukraine Invasion - Please do not post videos showing attacks/similar

Well "similar" might be possible still within the bounds of the argument they're looking at as in a bit bigger than ATACMS, some existing missile Ukraine has made more accurate possibly.

But more to the point, forget analysing the blasts, if it were a missile strike then hitting the train and disabling the railway bridge too was very lucky, a nice coincidence!

Seems more like that was intentional as the railway bridge is the higher value target so in that case: truck or drone boat seem more likely.

I'm kinda persuaded by something along the lines of a big fertilizer bomb assembled in Russia and remotely detonated.

Little about it makes sense to me - truck bomb or boat bomb seems the most obvious, can also produce the kind of explosion seen, but one big enough, unless we are seriously underestimating the lacking construction quality of the bridge, to cause the collapse seen should have left a much messier scene and more obvious blast damage on the 2nd span and rail span. Many other types of improvised explosion should have produced a lot of black smoke - though maybe the strong and constant wind currents over the bridge are changing some factor.

It is almost certainly not a normal cruise missile strike.

FAE fits the second half of the explosion (especially if it wasn't quite optimal ratios), size of explosion vs general blast energy and the intense heat damage seen but there is little evidence of the initial fuel cloud/shockwave.

Doesn't really seem right for shaped charges - though they could have left the scene with relatively neat damage like it is and can produce some secondary venting the explosion seems far too large for that.

Then there is the train stopped so neatly there - if it had been travelling at normal speed when hit it should have continued quite some distance before coming to a stop and there doesn't seem to be anything which would have compromised it if it had been on approach when the explosion happened and subsequently stopped there - possible for some reason they regularly happen to slow or stop there though it seems unlikely, or the train driver was either in on it or train had been hijacked or something though.

Everything seems to have a bit of theatrics about it like it was staged somehow.

I wonder if Musk realises how fortunate he is that he gets to live in a country where he can say stupid, embarrassing **** that values the contribution of fairly passive entrepreneurs versus Russia who'd probably have killed him by now? Perhaps he thinks he'd be in a position to contort that system to his benefit failing to realise that intellectualism of any sort (beyond how best to steal something from someone) is sacrilege, just doesn't seem like what a rational, intelligent person would conclude given even a cursory look into Russian society or any criminal enterprise.
He is an internet troll. Why folk don't get it ******* beyond me.

He has said some stupid things - but people seem to have a knee jerk reaction to Elon and often don't read what he has actually said or the full context sometimes interpreting his words through their own prejudices - especially when the significant part of his comment(s) is bigger picture stuff. His opinions on Ukraine are a bit weird, and skewed by some odd beliefs/politics, but he does seem to be trying to understand the situation - but he has a long way and a lot of revelations to go yet.

Unfortunately for Elon, it's like someone wandering into a room mid argument, and trying to settle it, without understanding any of the context. He hasn't even asked 'why am I wrong' as such, only stuck to his guns and tried harder to 'resolve the issue' again, without understanding the context.

Peace is better than war, but Russia are the one's doing the damage here, not Ukraine. Russia has every opportunity just to walk away, but choose not to.

Couldn't have put it better - his comments are literally like someone jumping into the middle of an argument without knowing the details - while he has a favoured position which is still coming through his latest comments seem to be trying to be more flexible.

I used to find Elon someone I found a lot in common with but the last few years he seems to have gone down a really weird rabbit hole. Some of the stuff he has said recently is really disappointing after his more intellectual, bigger picture, take on the same kind of stuff a few years ago.

That is an outrageous slur against poor old Vladimir who is busy talking with WHS people about the rash of accidental falls from windows plaguing the influential in his country.

Sounds like Putin is going to meet with Erdogan to discuss negotiations. I think Russia will be somewhat naive in this discussion and will want to keep the land it has “annexed” but they are very clearly losing this war to the point that Crimea will be lost eventually. I’m not sure where they will want to come to an agreement. https://www.reuters.com/world/europ...ea-russia-west-talks-kremlin-says-2022-10-10/

Can't see it being anything else but a waste of time but Erdogan seems to fancy playing the global statesman lately so might try to sweeten the deal.

Hmm that’s not how it was explained to me when I left, the way I understood it was you were liable for any service you didn’t complete ie i completed 16 years colour service and if I wasn’t offered redundancy I would have been liable to be called up for another 6 years or my 40th birthday, which ever was sooner
I completed all my service - and I will have Liability until I'm 55. I don't think it as always been this way; I assumed having completed my full time i wouldn't have any liabilaty, but then my reporting letter arrived with the good news.

Do you get a retention bonus, checks on competency in your speciality, fitness etc? I am sure you are much better than some of the mobilised Russians portrayed but soldiers with a return to service liability need to be fitter than average and retain their skills to be of use to the country.

As far as i know there is no official stats for it but from what little is coming out about it, it does seem like the Russian losses is considerable higher on average.

Saw a picture recently of the interior of the same base design of ship in Russian and Chinese service - sure the Chinese one was much newer build but it looked like you'd see from a Western ship in service (probably a bit nicer as it was likely from commissioning) while the Russian one was literally rusting away and almost literally held together with shoe strings and tape...

I’ve worked on a Chinese built LNG carrier in my time, and despite it only being 2 years old, we had massive problems with pipes in both freshwater and seawater cooling systems corroding through, it was normal to come across a pipe spraying water from a hole in an elbow or a flange into the engine room. We used to joke that they must have used ‘Chinesium’ instead of steel.

Additionally, there didn’t seem to be any kind of plan when they’d installed the piping in the yard, so it was an absolute illogical mess, trying to trace lines and find valves to isolate leaks was a nightmare. Furthermore, the shipyard hadn’t seen fit to use graphite steam gasket material for the steam service system, so it was a constant battle having to play whack-a-mole with steam leaks.

If the standard of construction on that ship was anything to go by, I wouldn’t worry about Chinese naval expansion.
