I see some parallels here with Hitler - something often glossed over - Hitler enabled some really horrific people in the regime he presided over some of them arguable worse than he was even - and then had to facilitate them to a degree to maintain his hold on power. I see the same with Putin.

Increasingly Putin has been giving off "it is an acceptable cost of doing business" kind of vibes when it comes to the atrocities involved with this war - he really doesn't give a **** what happens to the people of Ukraine as long as his goal is achieved.

This makes a lot of sense. Becoming a leader requires a lot of lifts and the payback is highest when the borrower has most to lose.
