t the same time tensions are running high between the Wagner mercenaries and the regular Russian army with Prigozhin calling out General Gerasimov for not supporting Wagner with the required weapons and munitions to sustain operations.
If I was the General I wouldn't be supporting them either. I would be far more inclined to keep the extremely limited resources for the regular army and not a bunch of mercenaries out for themselves. I think Putin has made a massive error of judgement using what is basically a private militia to conduct what should be brigade level operations.

I would guess that the aircraft's IFF transponder had somehow failed.

I'm engaging in a bit of idle speculation here but the IFF could have been working perfectly and they still shot it down.

There was a bit of speculation with the first attack on the base the the Ukrainians had somehow managed to spoof a Russian jet's IFF transponder onto the drone so it would show up on Russian RADAR as a friendly and not immediately get intercepted and shot down. It doesn't need to be perfect, just good enough to doubt into the minds of the Air defence operators to ask their higher up what to do so giving the done / missile enough time to reach its target. I would guess that they did it again this time and spoofed the IFF of a Russian fighter aircraft. It didn't work quite so well this time and the Russian scrambled a Su-27 to intercept it. However the drone / missile made it to the base and the IFF combined with a bit of clever routing to make it look like an aircraft on a landing approach fooled the local base air defence to allow it to slam into it's target. Then an unfortunate chain of event happen, well for the pilot of the SU-27. The operators of the bases air defence have not been told that the jet has been scrambled, that information has got lost somewhere. The Su-27 shows up too late to shoot down the drone / missile but arrives in the area of the local base air defence coverage just after the missile hits. The air defence operators see a friendly IFF contact on their screens, possibly of the same type as the one that has just turned out to be a missile, and it is approaching from the same direction. They go "Aha, those Ukrainians must think we are so stupid that we will fall for this twice in the same day, FIRE!"

I'm in two minds about it (since civilians are a likely casualty from Russia's lack of care) but Ukraine could keep Russia off base with exploiting their **** inter-organisation information handling into effectively doing more damage to themselves than Ukraine does directly, probably already the case around Belgorod tbf.

Belarus is fair game to Ukraine surely? They were complicit in the invasion.

That'd be a provocation and an escalation Ukraine doesn't want to give either Lukashenko or Putin propaganda ammunition to fire at them. It also might lessen western resolve if Ukraine is seen to be the aggressor right now it has sympathy for being the victim in this war. Despite it being the platform to launch an invasion aimed at Kyiv and possibly and surrepticiously supplying Moscow with missiles they havn't committed an openly hostile or aggressive act against Ukraine, Lukashenko's own position is too weak for that he has little popular support unlike Putin and even less popular enthusiasm for any war against Ukraine, if ukraine launches an attack that could change hence Lukashenko wanting to make as much political capital out of a stray missile as possible (there are so many fired and they being so old/poor in design its almost inevitable some will go astray)

Russian media have been sent new guidelines from the Kremlin on what message to deliver to viewers:

  • Putin made the only possible correct decision in order to prevent an imminent NATO attack on Russia.
  • NATO and Ukraine started planning an attack and enslavement of Russians since 2014.
  • The special military operation is a bonafide success because it prevented that NATO attack.
  • Russia now has new regions and more new land than Crimea, Slovakia, Croatia, or Denmark!
  • Russia is not fighting Ukraine but rather NATO, you must refer to Ukrainians as little as possible.
  • We're not looking for quick victories, and time is on Russias side. NATO support is waning, with increasingly fewer supplies going to Ukraine.
  • Russia is now the leader of the anti-West block that champions a multi-polar world.
  • Putin is giving Europe one last chance to come to their senses, and realize they're mere puppets, and that the only future they have is in close cooperation and friendship with Russia.

Going forward Putin will never meet with media again, Kremlin blames new covid mutations and mutated seasonal flu's (there is no evidence of either)
