8.6 million soldiers out of 27 million total Soviet losses. 25 million is nearly double the Nazi forces. It’s very sizeable and a very different kind of war if it gets to that scale.

You're right, it's much worse! This is being sold to everyday Russians (most of which aren't media savvy) as "NATO are coming, prepare for war!!!"
This bit may sound confrontational but I don't mean it that way - You're making the same old mistake of conflating the idea that your "Western" mindset is shared by everyone else. It isn't and it never will be.
Russians generally think differently to you on most subjects and what they are willing as casualties to accept is vastly different to what your Western mindset thinks is too much. Luckily Governments and militaries around the globe have people dedicated to ignoring what that "Western" mindset and instead rely on experts (many of which live/lived/studied in Russia) to base their countries "how much will Russia accept" response.
For example of the difference, if the US/UK in Iraq '03 had lost 180,000+ soldiers with 1 year of the invasion and both countries had to start a Draft for another combined 500,000 troops with more Drafts to come, would the public in our countries still be "pro-Invasion", because Russians generally still are, even after all that death. Thats the difference, its that simple!
Most rural russians are old drunks who's brain would still rattle if put inside a hazelnut shell. If Nato's goal was to invade Russia then what are we waiting for, there would be no better time than now.

Grudges don’t disappear overnight. Given time Russia can prepare for a huge conflict. Being the laughing stock now will only spur them on in future. I don’t think they will suddenly become a peaceful nation because of what happened.

From her statements and actions it seems Merkel agrees with Scholz and she is former Soviet East German (although considered rightwing), Scholz is from West Germany and was spied on by the Stasi so I'm not sure that is accurate. I don't think it's a left-right thing but is a German cultural issue based on historical events and closeness to Russia. Current German Chancellor Olaf Scholz traveled to the GDR several times in the 1980s as a leader of his party's youth wing. He was granted special treatment in the former East, then followed home and spied on in Hamburg.
