He was in East Germany and a Marxist. Says it all really

From her statements and actions it seems Merkel agrees with Scholz and she is former Soviet East German (although considered rightwing), Scholz is from West Germany and was spied on by the Stasi so I'm not sure that is accurate. I don't think it's a left-right thing but is a German cultural issue based on historical events and closeness to Russia. It was on her watch that Germany became so dependent on Russian gas after all.

The heroes are coming back. The guy had 23 years in jail for killing a judge. He hit him 40 times with a coal rake and dropped a dumbell from his height 3 times. The torture continued until 5am. He served 10 years and had 13 left, but has been released now. After all, he is a war hero.

Is it awful of me that the first thing I think about is the "winners" from The Running Man when I see a story like this, as in it's good PR to show people the benefits of serving and most importantly, surviving, but in reality I doubt we see many stories like this in the future despite Russia saying there's lots who've earned their freedom!

Presumably he's one of the prison service's 'helpers' - helped torture other prisoners out of all their wealth - and so treated slightly better than non-existent.

The problem then is No CR2 means no CR3. Which leaves us in a hole with limited armour capability and a huge bill to replace them with something else.
In all honesty, I don't see any real issue with no CR3, we should just cancel the program and send Ukraine all of our CR2s.

It may seem crazy, but we have no real use for tanks and haven't for years now, they're just a waste of money because at the end of the day, we're an island, nobody is invading us with tanks and the only battle we're likely to be getting into by ourselves in the next fifty years is maybe defending the Falklands from Argentina again (no tanks needed).

IMO it's time to acknowledge that any fighting our armed forces do this century will be as part of a coalition alongside allies, and to base the makeup of our armed forces around that, not just try to have a subpar amount of everything.

I think the 120mm is more than enough for destroying russian tanks, war in Ukraine has shown there is no need for any larger calibre.
At this point I think a Black Widow catapult and some decent steel BBs is enough :P

Why are Germany reluctant all the time to give Ukraine what they need? They keep putting up barriers for no good reason.
Similar applies to the USA, you have to question Biden's thinking when he keeps refusing to give Ukraine longer range HIMARs missiles when he's the reason they need them >.>

There is one of the reasons for having tanks - if someone did invade sans-tanks us having tanks on the mainland automatically gives us a big advantage, though the likelihood of us being invaded is pretty slim you never know where things might go in future years, especially the way Russia is going.

Allies can shift, what we might think is a solid relationship today might deteriorate tomorrow.

Personally don't see the need for a huge tank force - we are very capable of combined/complex multi-discipline operations negating the need for a massive tank force but it is still wise to have the core of one because when stuff hits the wall there is no substitute for a main battle tank even in this day and age. Dropping below a minimum of 3 armoured regiments + spares and some reserve forces would be short sighted.

Oh my. Please elaborate on why you think Biden is too blame here and specifically what you mean by your comment.
Biden was Obama's vice president, one of his first big "wins" was to help broker a deal with Ukraine whereby they would scrap all of their short range ballistic missiles, launch vehicles, missiles transports, fuel trucks, etc and get rid of their infrastructure for building them. In exchange they would get US security guarantees and economic benefits, and the US would in turn win favour with Putin.

Needless to say that if Ukraine still had hundreds of missiles capable of striking Moscow then not much would have happened in 2022.

Do you have an article for this? The only thing I can find is foxnews which is pure BS. (For example, they blame Biden at the end of the article for the Afghanistan withdrawal, without mentioning once that it was actually Trump that set the withdraw from Afghanistan up).

Canada were looking to divest its Leo 2 fleet, then along came Afghan and the decision was reversed, as its actually handy having mobile armoured artillery. Its also the reason the Royal Navy spent decades on US aircraft carriers - once the capability to Naval air ops was ended, the skills have to be kept up to date or regenerating them takes a significant amount of time

I think either Perun or Chieftain covered a similar point about regenerating capability.

To answer the diiscussion above about spending - the money being `sent` to Ukraine for arms isnt really going in country. The USA (and UK ) are doing a blinder - they are sending the oldest equipment, weapons and ammo and the funding is simply replacing it in US stores. USA and UK are seeing how the long stored kit is working after being on the shelf for a decade, and then order new shiny stuff.

Same with the Challenger 2`s - they have been long stored in Canada, the oldest wagons not the main fleet. Still work and will do the job ofc, and give the 3rd gen T72`s a hard time (thats the T90`s)

I work with a Tanky, he has assured me that the Fleet of CR2's that were in Canada were in much better condition than the fleet that gets handed around between the Tank regiments in the UK. The ones in BATUS were used 3 times a year albeit for extended periods of time. They might go through hell on the prairie. However, over that period of time the crews look after them and have at least some sense of ownership over them. Then they go into the winter refit.
The Tank fleet in the UK gets passed around like a cheap hooker, nobody looks after them properly nor cares to the condition. A crew might spend a week with it tops, then it gets passed on to someone else. There is no great incentive to look after it when its not your wagon. Short sighted but thats just how it is. Squaddies gonna squad. I can also attest to that being the case for most of the equipment in the Army, we dont hold enough of it generally for every detachment within every sub-unit within every Regiment within every Brigade to have their own kit. Often the kit gets passed around to whoever is on readiness. Really is a sad state of affairs.
