Russia’s land borders are going to be busy again.

They've been slowly clamping down on able bodied people leaving the country - a lot less will be able to leave now, not quite sure why they've been taking those measures so slowly though like with many other things like the ramping up of military related industry which has also been really slow. Not sure if due to the image Putin likes to project or whether the further up the chain of command you go the more removed from the realities by yes men distorting the real picture.

I get they have a job to do but I wouldn't be in Russia right now for any amount of money. If Russia can use you as a pawn they will, if that means locking you up for years on trumped up charges they will.
To be honest they've always kept journalists at arms length but they've generally been safe from things like this until now, so I guess other foreign journalists are wondering whether to stay or not

Their employers should pull them out. Nothing is worth ending up in a Russian jail where you will likely be used and abused by the people in your cell.

We needed them between 1941 and 1945 to kill Germans so that US and Brits Empire forces didn’t have to.

If their moral compass had been a little better calibrated from the start maybe far fewer people need die.

Their outlook was as expansionist then as it is now. If not more so.

The idea they did the world a favour in ww2 is a great distortion of reality. They were complicit in creating the problem they eventually had to face down.

Yeah like the Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact so they could partition eastern Europe between them and so on, it was a significant possibility Russia wouldn't have stopped at the end of WW2 to the point consideration was made for putting German soldiers back into action against them under allied command.

I wouldn't be surprised if Stalin wasn't tempted to push on but considering they'd got half of Europe out of it he might have been happy with that. Its amazing when you look at a map and just how many countries they swallowed up.

In all fairness, that was their plan-B, they originally wanted a mutual defence pact with France/Britain so if Hitler smashed east or west everyone would smash back. We refused so Stalin made a deal with the devil to delay Hitler's invasion of the USSR in the hope he could better prepare for it.

IMO it was more they didn't have the domestic production and logistics for fuel, etc. to continue a war at that point - otherwise things might have gone differently. The US had supplied them with large amounts of petrol products, etc. to sustain their offensive against Germany in the dying months of WW2.

Just like the 3rd separate assault brigade in Bakhmut, the 36th marine brigade in Avdiivka is doing an absolute class job to repulse wave after wave of enemy infantry and heavy equipment. In this footage another attack is fend off.

Smoking  @Noelreports twitter

Imagine how differently things would have been if the Russians had committed to protect Poland etc and contain Nazi Germany rather than put their snout in the trough. I very much doubt ww2 would have happened.

Or, the worst case scenario: imagine how different things would have been if Stalin hadn't betrayed Hitler, and had instead remained his ally.

There was no possibility for Stalin to remain Hitler's ally after the outcome of the previous war.

Nah, it could have happened if Stalin hadn't been so paranoid.

Remember that he started by trying to form an anti-Hitler pact with the Allies, then made a pact with Hitler that encouraged him to attack Poland, then backflipped after growing concerned by Hitler's success across Western Europe.
