The big problem at this point, is that Crimea has been under DeFacto Russian control for over nine years now. That's almost half the time Ukraine controlled it for previously. Which shouldn't mean anything as they took it illegally, but in reality it does mean something because it's become the status quo and that's something western governments are often ill pressed to mess with, even if Ukraine pushed Russia back to pre-22 borders and wanted to lay a bloody siege to Crimea that would make Bakhmut look like a tea party it's unlikely they would be given the resources to do it due to how bad the political optics would be.It’s not over yet.
Reports today the US leaning on the Ukrainian government to appear more open to negotiation but still, Crimea I think realistically is something which is going to be decided on down the line in reality rather than ideals, limitations or goals right now.
