Putin is simply just doing what he needs to look like he's the man. Even being photo'd whilst on the frontline and should the war starts then he gets bonus points from the RU Federal Assembly.

It wouldn't surprise me if Putin rides the first tank into the region. The NATO/US wouldn't attack to ensure a US vs RU doesn't start. The area is 60% Russian so Donbas is relatively safe to perform a photo shoot.
